PETA Pulls off the Great (Elephant) Escape!
Wails pierced the air as a young elephant named Mariappan was torn away from his mother. Elephants’ language is rich with emotion and nuance, and scientists have even created an online translator for their rumbles, purrs, trumpets, shrieks, and hums. But the meaning of this mother and son’s cries were perfectly clear: “Please, don’t take my baby away!” and “Mama, save me!” Mother and Child Reunion Family bonds mean everything to elephants. In their natural habitat, these highly social animals live in matriarchal herds and mourn their dead. They navigate ancient trails to follow seasonal rains, walking up to 30 miles (48 kilometers) a day. Isolated in a filthy, dark shed at an Indian temple and tightly restrained by all four legs, Mariappan couldn’t do any of those things. But, with the help of PETA India, a local supporter persuaded the temple to free him: After nine long, lonely years in captivity, he was moved to a rescue center and – best of all – reunited with his mother.
and Circus Vargas have gone animal-free, Garden Bros. Circus appears to have stopped using elephants, and Canada’s Shrine circuses haven’t featured elephants or other wild animals since PETA filed a lawsuit in 2015. Elephant rides are off Tripadvisor’s agenda at PETA’s urging, and more than 50 other companies have taken the same ethical stand. Thanks to work by PETA and
its affiliates, bans on exotic-animal performances and the use of bullhooks – those cruel “tools of the trade” used to beat and coerce elephants into doing tricks – are spreading all over the world. PETA will keep pushing until all elephants are free to trumpet with joy. It’s no small job, but with your help, compassion will prevail.

Wrestling With Tofu? PETA Will Fix That! Even though tofu is one of the most versatile foods, some people have no idea what to do with it! So, to make the point that tofu can be used for almost anything , a pair of PETA supporters wrestled not with tofu but in it, as “fans” handed out free cartons of tofu and urged spectators to give meat, eggs, and dairy the smackdown. Also known as "bean curd," it can be used to create knockout vegan versions of every culinary delight imaginable – from spicy Chinese stir-fries to decadent cheesecakes.

Win! Secret Deodorant Ends Tests on Animals The secret is out: Leading deodorant brand Secret has joined PETA’s list of more than 4,700 companies and brands that don’t test on animals. A spokesperson for parent company Procter & Gamble (P&G) told PETA, “As a pioneer in animal testing alternatives, we are thrilled to add Secret to the list of P&G brands that are part of PETA’s Global Beauty Without Bunnies program.”
By the same token, we have to point out another elephant in the room at this time of year: the turkey. Although “Tom Turkey” may be the traditional centerpiece, he’s got to go. Killed, stuffed, and cooked for human enjoyment, his worth as an individual is made invisible, as if his life – full of meaning to him – were ours for the taking. Just as women were seen as bimbos and a history of genocide in America has been reduced to an annual celebration, many people mistakenly believe turkeys are merely food. They are anything but.
Experimenter Retires After PETA Files Lawsuit
When PETA requested video footage from US taxpayer–funded self-mutilation studies on monkeys at four National Primate Research Centers, including University of Massachusetts–Amherst (UMass), the university refused to comply. So PETA sued. UMass folded, PETA got the videos – which show distressed monkeys rocking back and forth, tearing out their fur, and poking at their own eyes – and experimenter Melinda Novak, who made a career of tormenting monkeys, suddenly announced her retirement. The purported point of the experiments was to show how monkeys suffer in laboratories, but after three decades, they have not led to even one legally mandated improvement in primates’ living conditions.

One day, children will look at photographs of people sitting around a table and eating the corpse of a bird who was once full of life and, understanding that something is quite literally wrong with that picture, they’ll ask, “Why did they let people do that?” Let’s make sure we can tell them howwe stopped it. Here’s to a happy activist Thanksvegan and all other holidays.
A cting at PETA India’s request, the governments of several Indian states ordered local authorities to enforce laws against cruel spiked bits, which are widely used in Indian weddings, during which grooms ride white mares and are accompanied by blasting trumpets, pounding drums, and exploding firecrackers. Used to control the frightened horses, spiked bits can cut deeply into their mouths, ripping their lips and tongues.

The Stories of Nosey, Gajraj, and Sunder Winning Their Freedom!

Nosey exploring her new home
PETA had only hours to act. Nosey, an elephant whose suffering it had been documenting for years, had just been confiscated by Alabama authorities! A humane officer had found her marooned in her own manure, swaying neurotically in a cramped trailer. PETA’s chief lawyer on the case postponed her anniversary dinner and sped to the airport, not even stopping to pack a bag. The Long Road to Rescue For over a decade, PETA had done everything possible to win Nosey’s freedom from circus operator Hugo Liebel, holding protests, meeting with members of Congress and state regulators to plead Nosey’s case, urging authorities to bar her appearances, and persuading venues not to host performances involving the arthritic, ailing elephant. PETA filed dozens of complaints with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), which cited Liebel for nearly 200 federal Animal Welfare Act violations – but still rubberstamped his exhibitor’s license. County, Alabama, animal control officer to ask a judge to have her seized. She was transported to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. On the day of reckoning, Nosey’s supporters waited with bated breath, but Lawrence County District Court Judge Angela Terry ruled that the elephant would not spend the rest of her life in abject servitude. PETA supported Lawrence County attorneys every step of the way, providing mountains of evidence as well as elephant experts to testify in court as Liebel fought tooth and nail to get his meal ticket back. Today, Nosey is thriving. She wades in a pond, roams the forest, tosses branches around, and runs back and forth through an elephant-size “doggie door” to her barn. Indian Deities in Name Only Meanwhile, PETA India was hard at work securing rescue for two more desperately sad and lonely elephants. Gajraj was only 12 when he was torn away from his family and given to a local rani (queen) as a wedding gift. He spent 50 years in solitary confinement, usually chained by all four legs, suffering from abscesses and grotesquely swollen joints. PETA
India sent veterinarians to treat him, but despite their pleas, the rani refused to free him.
court – and won! But on the day of his move, people rioted, tried to stop the transport truck, and threatened PETA India staff. However, his rescuers did not falter, even when angry men on motorbikes gave chase. From Beatings to Blessings Now, Sunder is safe at the 122-acre (49-hectare) Bannerghatta Biological Park, where he delights in foraging in the woods, swimming in ponds, and hanging out with his best friend, Lakshmi. He recently made news again when he was observed cleverly using twigs to scratch his ears and clean his teeth. Finally, he can enjoy the blessings he’s always deserved.
PETA India and its affiliates publicized Gajraj’s plight, telling his story in the UK’s The Sun . More than 200,000 supporters signed a petition demanding his release, and the Forest Department finally impounded him. In 2017, he was unchained and sent to the Wildlife SOS sanctuary! There, he spent the rest of his life, happy, roaming free, and relishing the company of other elephants and kind caretakers before passing away in his sleep last summer. Rioters Jeopardize Sunder’s Escape Sunder was chained inside a temple to collect money from villagers in exchange for “blessings” – a cursed existence. An undercover video showed his handler beating him as he lay on the ground, and his body bore the horrifying evidence – including a massive leg wound and a hole in his ear. Hundreds of thousands of people saw the video, including Pamela Anderson and Paul McCartney, and demanded his release. PETA India took the footage to

T hey may not have cut off mice’s tails with a carving knife, but experimenters at the Cleveland Clinic, one of the largest government-funded research institutes in the US, did just about everything else to animals imprisoned in shoebox-like plastic cages. Skulls Cut Open, Spines Exposed A PETA investigator learned that experimenters cut open mice’s skulls – with minimal pain relief – and
Siri
suctioned out portions of their brains. They glued a glass pane over the gaping wound to create a “window.” They injected some mice with a chemical that causes a neurological disorder, leaving many paralyzed and only able to drag themselves to their food. Experimenters then cut into the animals’ backs and separated muscles from vertebrae to take images of their spinal cords. What They Did to Daisy and the Others Experimenters deliberately bred mice to have pelvic organ prolapse, causing the uterus, bladder, or rectal tissue to bulge outside the body, and then bred them, too. PETA’s investigator named one of these mice Daisy. She had a painful rectal prolapse, forcing her to drag the protruding tissue through her bedding. Asked about giving her something to make her more comfortable, the experimenter’s aide said no, adding that “if they just linger,” mice are usually gassed at 1 year of age because “their breeding goes down.” That was ultimately Daisy’s fate – but only after the investigator observed her suffering for 10 weeks. Genetically manipulated mice used in a kidney experiment developed massive growths and sores. One scratched incessantly at a growth that covered nearly half her face and drove her crazy. When told
that these mice were in pain, the experimenter accused the workers of wanting to “kill” the animals “just because they’re ugly.” Not Even a Peaceful End Driven frantic by extreme crowding, parent mice trampled their own newborns to death or even cannibalized them. One technician called such deaths “acceptable-ish.” Mice were also left in buckets without food or water – or in a cage bound for the garbage. One gasped for breath for more than an hour before finally being euthanized. Even though more than 90% of studies on animals fail to lead to therapies that help humans, experimenters torture and kill thousands of animals at the Cleveland Clinic every year. It received $100 million in public funding through the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2019 alone – and squandered nearly half of it on animal experiments. Deadly Sales Demos on Dogs Axed None of this suffering, neglect, and death is “acceptable-ish.” PETA has held the Cleveland Clinic to account before. In 2007, the group revealed that an unauthorized and fatal brain surgery had been

that they are the great white saviors of Africans who “depend” on them. But a new PETA investigation shows that these small people with fragile egos care nothing about wildlife or locals and their way of life. Bullets and Belly Laughs PETA has obtained video footage that shows an American trophy hunter, Aaron Raby, ineptly gunning down an inquisitive young elephant. As paid guides direct him, he shoots the animal, who has peacefully ambled out of the bush only yards away. The elephant falls to his knees and looks at the hunting party. The guides – clearly anxious to make their client happy because he has paid $30,000 for bragging rights and the “thrill” of the kill – do nothing to end the elephant’s misery. As Raby fires again and again, the young elephant begins to rumble, using the language of his species to express his pain and confusion or perhaps to warn away other elephants. How long the elephant suffered before finally dying is unknown, as the recording ends. A crane operator from Los Angeles County, Raby has killed many animals and boasts about it to like-minded friends. He murdered this young elephant near South Africa’s famous Kruger National Park, where the species is protected. But because there are no fences, elephants wander over the invisible boundary and are suddenly at risk of losing their lives. In fact, trophy hunting guides track the movements of animals in the park in order to know exactly when some European or American bwana (boss) can gun animals down. Since When Is Breeding to Kill ‘Conservation’? Those involved in the hunting business breed wild animals specifically to be killed for trophies. PETA followed the money trail and discovered that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa owns a 50% stake in a company called Tsala Hunting Safaris, breeding animals at his own operation, Phala Phala. He then sends them to his hunting ranch, Diepdrift, where foreigners pay to shoot them. Queen Elizabeth II has blood on her hands after entering pigeons in the grueling South African Million Dollar Pigeon Race (SAMDPR), in which birds from all over the world are forced to fly hundreds of miles in extreme weather conditions. C hristmas traditions are comforting, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned from the coronavirus pandemic, it’s that we sometimes have to get creative and find newways of doing things. This is nothing new to vegans, who excel at modifying their families’ traditions and cherished recipes and creating even better versions that don’t harm animals. Most supermarkets now stock a variety of vegan options – from dairy-free butter to faux chicken – so swapping out ingredients is a snap. Add the garlic powder, salt, and pepper and stir well. • Add all the veggies and vegan chicken. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring frequently, until heated through, about 8minutes. • Roll out each sheet of puff pastry dough. Place one in the bottom of a pie pan. Fill with the veggies and “chicken” mixture then cover with the remaining dough. Cut off any excess dough and crimp the edges with a fork. • Bake for 20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.

When you say “Nope!” to personal-care and cleaning products tested in rabbits’ eyes or poured down guinea pigs’ throats, you’ll be saving some of the 300,000 animals exploited in cosmetics testing for the international market in China. You’ll also be saying “No way!” to the painful Draize eye irritancy test, which leaves rabbits’ eyes ulcerated, hemorrhaging, or blinded. Shampoos alone have dozens of ingredients, so anything labeled “cruelty-free” and “vegan” avoids supporting many inhumane tests. Well done!
Simply by not eating animals (or their secretions), you’ll save nearly 200 lives a year. You’ll also prevent their beaks and horns from being cut off and their beloved offspring from being torn away from them. You won’t be supporting their transport through ice

Just by not giving money to a pet store or breeder, you’re saving dogs, cats, and other animals from being bred for distorted physical features that cause them chronic health problems. And your choice gives a lucky animal a better chance of getting adopted from a shelter into a loving home! While breeders crank out litters, more than 70 million homeless animals struggle to survive in the US alone. Opting to “adopt, not shop” saves a mother cat or dog from a breeding mill, changes everything for the lucky animal who joins your family, and sets a good example for others.

Confessions of an International PETA Provocateur I n the ’90s, I made my demonstration debut – the weirdest experience I’d ever had. investigations, including the one exposing forced monkey labor on Thailand’s coconut farms – which prompted more than 25,000 stores worldwide to drop coconut products picked by monkeys. Other investigations have revealed that training baby bears in Asia means chaining them to a wall by the neck – and that training baby elephants means tying them down and beating them until they’re too psychologically damaged to defend themselves. I go wherever I’m needed, and sometimes that commitment takes me to dangerous places. In 2006, I traveled to the war zone in Lebanon to feed dogs and cats left behind after air strikes. In my 25-plus years with PETA, I’ve traveled over 2 million miles, organizing hundreds of demonstrations on five continents and in every major city in Asia and North America. I’ve also helped set up PETA affiliates in India, Asia, and Australia.

humiliation. In this case, I helped persuade personal care product giant Gillette to “have a heart” and stop testing on animals. Working at PETA Stinks I’ve “starred” in more than 100 demonstrations over the years. Those world-famous PETA cage demos? That was my idea – one that I’ve questioned after spending all day crammed inside a crate. I blocked a poultry convention’s entrance with a truckload of manure and a “Meat Stinks” sign. Why? Because chicken carcasses are contaminated with so much E. coli that kitchens may actually harbor more fecal bacteria than toilets do.
to stop government testing on animals. I became so well known to his staff that once when I arrived at an airport with a volunteer, a Secret Service agent asked, “Which of you is Jason Baker?” Our persistence paid off, and in a huge victory for animals, Gore caved and ordered the chemical-testing program to spare more than 3 million animals. photographed outside the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, protesting the testing of chemicals used in Huggies on mice. After taking one look at me, the CEO reportedly said, “I don’t care what it takes, but I want us to stop testing on animals. I don’t want protesting babies outside a shareholder meeting ever again.” That diaper picture is still shown around at the office, but that’s fine, because attention-grabbing demonstrations succeed. They get people talking about the fact that using animals means hurting living, feeling beings, and they get companies to the negotiating table. In the Slammer With Celebs I’ve had the pleasure of working with Pamela Anderson, who stormed a KFC with me, and Chrissie Hynde, who is up for anything, including protesting mulesing – a gruesome mutilation of lambs in which large portions of skin and flesh are cut from their rumps. I’ve been arrested more than a dozen times while protesting cruelty to animals, and may I say that New York City jails are always special. T he shed reeked. The gentle alpacas tied down on tables shrieked in terror – an “awful” noise that “sounded like a high-pitched electric pencil sharpener,” according to a reporter with The New York Times who watched footage captured by PETA investigators at Mallkini, the world’s largest privately owned alpaca farm, in Peru.
beings as commodities. PETA and its international affiliates were the first to investigate the angora, cashmere, mohair, and wool industries – and, in every single case, discovered violent abuse. Alpacas will continue to be bred, exploited, and slaughtered until consumers refuse to buy their wool. Big Brands Ban Alpaca Fleece PETA works with every fiber of its being to protect the fibers of all other beings. After talks with PETA, major brands – including Valentino, Marks & Spencer, Esprit, and UNIQLO, the third-largest clothing retailer in the world – have banned alpaca wool. Gap Inc. (which owns Banana Republic, Athleta, and others) and the H&M group (including its eight brands) have cut ties with the Michell Group, which owns Mallkini and is the world’s largest exporter of alpaca clothing and yarn. “Personally, I was heartbroken to watch the video and want you to know that this has been a top priority,” a Gap representative said in an e-mail to PETA. Held Down With Medieval Torture Devices No one had ever investigated the abuse in the alpaca fleece industry before PETA went undercover as part of a groundbreaking investigation that revealed workers hitting, kicking, and mutilating crying alpacas.
PETA’s investigators filmed workers roughly yanking the animals – some of whom were pregnant – off the floor by their tails and slamming them onto tables. Workers twisted the struggling animals’ limbs into a device resembling a medieval torture rack, stretching their bodies and nearly wrenching their legs out of their sockets. According to a veterinary expert who reviewed the footage, such “excessive force applied to the bones, joints, and soft tissues in the area” would likely cause dislocations, fractures, and severe permanent nerve damage. From Shed to Dead for a Woolly Hat Restraint is especially distressing to alpacas, who are prey animals and fear they’re about to be killed. At Mallkini, they spat – a response to feeling threatened – and cried out. They even vomited as workers held them down by the ears. As with sheep who are roughly shorn, some were left bleeding from deep, painful wounds, which workers stitched up without any pain relief. The workers then hurled animals to the concrete floor and even stood on their necks. Nearby, fellow terrified alpacas huddled together in fear. Alpacas Hum to Their Babies Alpacas are docile, inquisitive, and social. Excitement elicits a happy “wark” sound, and pregnant moms hum to their babies – something they also do when they’re happy or curious. They intertwine necks and nuzzle, and like female humans, female alpacas even trot to the “bathroom” together. A Custom-Designed ‘Manmade Beast’ Like dogs inbred to fight or hunt, alpacas were invented by humans. They are a cross between vicuñas and llamas, bred to produce so much wool that they must be shorn. Although they can live for up to 20 years, most are slaughtered by the age of 8. Their flesh ends up on plates in Peru.
