Mice with test tubes? Cute! Mice used as test tubes? Cruel! PETA’s new video short, which has aired fromHouston to Hong Kong, looks like a Pixar movie, but a surprise twist makes viewers think twice about experiments on mice and other animals. In another big win for small animals, PETA persuaded pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline to ban the practice of dropping mice and rats into beakers of water in the notorious “forced swim test.” After hearing from PETA, 11 of the world’s top pharma companies have banned these discredited experiments. Wrestling With Tofu? PETA Will Fix That! Even though tofu is one of the most versatile foods, some people have no idea what to do with it! So, to make the point that tofu can be used for almost anything , a pair of PETA supporters wrestled not with tofu but in it, as “fans” handed out free cartons of tofu and urged spectators to give meat, eggs, and dairy the smackdown. Also known as "bean curd," it can be used to create knockout vegan versions of every culinary delight imaginable – from spicy Chinese stir-fries to decadent cheesecakes.

I was gobsmacked by how marginalized and even invisible they were, and it made me think about the march of progress toward rights for all. Around Thanksgiving, many educators now teach children that unlike the old story about a happy feast shared by Pilgrims and Natives, circumstances weren’t so rosy for the original inhabitants when Europeans took their land – and often, their lives.

Victory! Crackdown on Illegal Spiked Bits

GONE! Monkey

Win! Secret Deodorant Ends Tests on Animals The secret is out: Leading deodorant brand Secret has joined PETA’s list of more than 4,700 companies and brands that don’t test on animals. A spokesperson for parent company Procter & Gamble (P&G) told PETA, “As a pioneer in animal testing alternatives, we are thrilled to add Secret to the list of P&G brands that are part of PETA’s Global Beauty Without Bunnies program.”

By the same token, we have to point out another elephant in the room at this time of year: the turkey. Although “Tom Turkey” may be the traditional centerpiece, he’s got to go. Killed, stuffed, and cooked for human enjoyment, his worth as an individual is made invisible, as if his life – full of meaning to him – were ours for the taking. Just as women were seen as bimbos and a history of genocide in America has been reduced to an annual celebration, many people mistakenly believe turkeys are merely food. They are anything but.

Experimenter Retires After PETA Files Lawsuit

When PETA requested video footage from US taxpayer–funded self-mutilation studies on monkeys at four National Primate Research Centers, including University of Massachusetts–Amherst (UMass), the university refused to comply. So PETA sued. UMass folded, PETA got the videos – which show distressed monkeys rocking back and forth, tearing out their fur, and poking at their own eyes – and experimenter Melinda Novak, who made a career of tormenting monkeys, suddenly announced her retirement. The purported point of the experiments was to show how monkeys suffer in laboratories, but after three decades, they have not led to even one legally mandated improvement in primates’ living conditions.

evolution, depend on us not to act as if our mouths were too full of stuffing to speak up. We must object, inform, and offer a vegan feast instead – now and always. One day, children will look at photographs of people sitting around a table and eating the corpse of a bird who was once full of life and, understanding that something is quite literally wrong with that picture, they’ll ask, “Why did they let people do that?” Let’s make sure we can tell them howwe stopped it. Here’s to a happy activist Thanksvegan and all other holidays.

A cting at PETA India’s request, the governments of several Indian states ordered local authorities to enforce laws against cruel spiked bits, which are widely used in Indian weddings, during which grooms ride white mares and are accompanied by blasting trumpets, pounding drums, and exploding firecrackers. Used to control the frightened horses, spiked bits can cut deeply into their mouths, ripping their lips and tongues.
