CANADA GOOSE: CRUELTY IN EVERY STITCH

DID YOU KNOW?

them with painful procedures like debeaking or wing-clipping can still label the down “responsible,” as long as they stop doing it within 30 days of being caught in the act. In addition, all birds used by the down industry are inevitably sent to the slaughterhouse, where standard practice is to hang them upside down, stun them, and then slit their throats. Following a PETA complaint and a subsequent Federal Trade Commission investigation, Canada Goose stopped claiming that its standards ensure that its suppliers don’t abuse animals. Cruelty-free synthetic down bedding and winter clothing are chic, innovative, and widely available in stores ranging from chains to boutiques. Faux fur and alternatives to down (such as PrimaLoft®, Thermoball™, and Plumtech™) are warm, lofty, and hypoallergenic. And unlike down, many of these vegan options retain their ability to insulate even when wet. #CANADAGOOSEKILLS

Cruelty is hiding in every stitch of Canada Goose clothing, from its fur-trimmed hoods and hats to its down-filled jackets. Coyotes caught in steel traps can sustain bone fractures, lacerations, and hemorrhaging and may even self-mutilate in an attempt to escape. Canada Goose’s “standards” allow them to languish in these very conditions indefinitely before the trapper returns to shoot, bludgeon, or kill them in some other horrific way. Trapped animals can also experience blood loss, shock, dehydration, frostbite, gangrene, and attacks by predators. Canada Goose says that it’s committed to the third-party Responsible Down Standard—but there’s no such thing as “responsible” down. This “standard” actually allows injured birds to suffer in pain for days before they’re required to be put out of their misery. And down suppliers who knowingly violate the standard by slaughtering birds while they’re fully conscious or mutilating
