Nick Cave and Iggy Pop’s PETA Video Will Leave You ‘Breathless’
I f we all acted like the people our dogs depend on us to be, the world would be a far kinder place. That’s the message of an uplifting PETA video featuring an animated Iggy Pop, who steps in to prevent various kinds of cruelty, accompanied by iconic band Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds’ song “Breathless.” In the video, which NME called “the cutest thing ever,” Iggy appears in his dog’s daydream as a bare-chested superhero who helps a turtle cross the road, frees fish from a net, and comes to the defense of a rabbit in a hare-raising attack – as Nick sings, “The rabbit hides beneath the ground / For he is defenseless without you / The sky of daytime dies away / And all the earthly things they stop to play / For we are all breathless without you.” Nick generously donated his song to PETA for the spot and calls the result “very cute and necessary.” The video ends with a real-life Iggy reading PETA President Ingrid Newkirk’s inspiring book One Can Make a Difference alongside his dog.
Real-Life Hero Iggy has often helped PETA help animals. In a hard hitting PETA print ad, he slammed Canada’s cruel seal slaughter. “Canada’s club scene sucks,” he said. “Clubbing baby seals is sick and gives Canada a black eye.” A University of Michigan alum, he wrote to the school on PETA’s behalf, urging it to stop abusing and killing cats and pigs in its survival training course for flight nurses. After a year of pressure from PETA, including help from Lily Tomlin, the university replaced its cruel and archaic cat laboratories with modern human simulators. Iggy also spoke at a PETA event at Florida’s gourmet vegan hot spot Sublime, presenting fellow rocker Joan Jett – a longtime animal advocate – with the Nanci Alexander Activist Award, named after the restaurant’s owner. At PETA’s 30 th Anniversary Gala and Humanitarian Awards, he joked about taking “a look at Dave’s … package,” referring to Dave Navarro’s provocative “Ink, Not Mink” naked anti-fur campaign.
