Taking Animal Rights on Tour

PETA2 REMINDS YOUNG PEOPLE THAT MILK IS FOR (COW) BABIES

Under a cow-print tent top, peta2 staffers handed out “Not Your Mom? Not Your Milk!” leaflets and stickers – along with other ditch the-milk materials. They were on hand at the Vans Warped Tour – the biggest traveling music festival in the US – for the 16th summer in a row. Their mission was to connect with hundreds of thousands of young people – the future of animal rights – about a variety of issues, with a special focus on the dairy industry. Attendees noshed on free vegan cheese samples and texted Domino’s Pizza to push for vegan cheese. They also played a digital match game, in which they decided whether baby giraffes, for example, should drink the milk of other animal mothers, such as

otters. The unnatural milk mash-ups made teens think twice about drinking the milk of a nonhuman species.

Another game challenged contestants to take life-size stuffed calves and shove them into veal crates as quickly as possible. An eyewitness video about veal showed terrified male calves snatched from their heartbroken mothers. Female calves endure similar agony when they’re forced to follow in their mothers’ miserable footsteps, until they can no longer produce milk and are slaughtered for their flesh.
