The game was a defensive stand-off, but PETA scored big at Super Bowl LIII. The group showed young fans that they can be champions for animals – and blitzed the hundreds of thousands of people who flocked to Atlanta – with billboards, demos, and vegan chicken-wing giveaways that connected like a Tom Brady sideline pass. PETA got sportswriters in the game, too, by sending them vegan recipes and chicken squeeze toys to remind them that birds prefer to sit the game out. PETA’s Super Bowl Touch Down

Iowa’s ‘Ag-Gag’ Law Shot Down

UncommonGoods Does Right by Fish – Petco Does Not When it learned from PETA that betta fish are warehoused in tiny bags and die in plastic cups on store shelves, UncommonGoods removed fish tanks from its site, a decision in keeping with its ban on leather, fur, and feathers. “My view is that we should always strive to have a better impact on people, animals, and the planet,” said CEO David Bolotsky. “When PETA approached us … it was an easy decision.”

Daniel Zhu, star of romantic dramas and the hit reality show Perfect Dating , is a heroic leading man on the Chinese screen. Now, he’s a hero for animals, too. He teamed up with PETA Asia to urge everyone to “try to relate to who’s on your plate.” The longtime vegan – whose brother owns a popular vegan restaurant in Taiwan – also narrated the latest version of PETA Asia’s slaughterhouse video Glass Walls . “Animals don’t want to die in order to decorate our plates, and with all the fortifying vegan foods on the market today, they shouldn’t have to,” he says.

PETA has scored another victory for animals and free speech. After the group filed a lawsuit challenging Iowa’s “ag-gag” law and arguing that it violated the First Amendment of the US Constitution, a federal judge agreed, sweeping the statute into the dustbin. PETA investigations have found workers at an Iowa farms kicking pigs in the head, and smashing piglets’ heads against concrete floors, but the state thought the best response was to help the agriculture industry cover up the abuse. Not happening!

GLOBAL HERBAL ESSENCES DITCHES ANIMAL TESTING Global hair-care giant Herbal Essences has joined the list of companies that don’t test on animals and will carry PETA’s cruelty-free bunny logo on its packaging. Its parent company, Procter & Gamble, has partnered with PETA for years to end animal testing, including by coauthoring a paper describing non-animal approaches to assessing respiratory toxicity. “We’re proud to have passed PETA’s stringent verification process to join their trusted list of cruelty-free brands,” said Herbal Essences Vice President Lisa Jennings.

Top Youth Travel Agency Flees Running of the Bulls The leading travel provider for people between the ages of 18 and 35 is pulling the plug on the Running of the Bulls. The Travel Corporation, which operates Busabout and Contiki, said that it listened to its customers – and to protests by PETA UK and PETA Australia – and will no longer offer trips to the festival of San Fermín in Pamplona, Spain, “mainly for the reason of the treatment of the bulls.” During the event, bulls are tormented in the streets before finally being stabbed to death in the bullring.

Twenty buses in Glasgow bore PETA UK ads against wool in the wake of a PETA Asia investigation into dozens of Scottish and English sheep farms. Caught on video were shearers slamming sheep’s heads into floors, stomping and standing on their necks, and throwing them off trailers. The footage prompted the first-ever cruelty charges in the UK wool industry – against a Scottish farmer, with more expected – and has persuaded global retail giant Alternative Apparel to stop selling wool. PETA India Holds Kite Swap to Save Lives The danger posed by illegal manja – deadly, glass-coated kite string – is real: Not only are thousands of pigeons, crows, and other birds killed each year, the razor-sharp string has also killed many human beings, including a 5-year-old boy. The throats of a young man and a doctor, both on motorbikes, were also slashed by manja in separate incidents. PETA India persuaded students in Ahmedabad to swap their kites for games, including cricket kits and chessboards.
