PETA: Bringing Home the Bagels Since 1980

out that they are not ours to kill just for a sandwich or a shoe, to infect with diseases, or to display as props. Our language must evolve to reflect this awareness. In the same way that the color of one’s skin cannot ethically be used as a reason to exploit, enslave, or discriminate against another human being, the presence of fur, feathers, or scales is no reason to slaughter or even demean another living being.

“Don’t you have bigger fish to fry?” That was one person’s reaction after PETA tweeted a list of animal friendly phrases to replace idioms that evoke harming animals, such as “kill two birds with one stone” or “beat a dead horse.” Although PETA has called for an end to speciesist language for decades, the issue was thrust into the spotlight after Shareena Z. Hamzah, a postdoctoral researcher at Swansea University, wrote a blog suggesting that the increase in the number of vegans will lead to a phasing out of anti-animal expressions like “bring home the bacon.” Hamzah hit the nail on the head. Research has shown that language does affect howwe think: It can reinforce – or challenge – prejudices and stereotypes. Clearly, when we call someone a “pig,” we imply that pigs are not intelligent animals, when in fact, they lead complex social lives and often showmore empathy than human beings, even rescuing their captors from fires and ponds. When we laughingly say that someone is being used “as a lab rat,” we trivialize the plight of rats who are poisoned, blinded, burned, and mutilated in laboratories and don’t deserve to be called “lab rats” any more than asylum seekers should be called “illegal aliens.” Using clichés such as “more than one way to skin a cat” desensitizes us and normalizes violence against animals. Like many other “-isms,” speciesism fosters an “us vs. them” mentality that allows bigotry and exploitation to flourish. Leaders of social justice movements have

long recognized that all oppression is linked. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Civil rights leader César Chávez – who, like Mohandas Gandhi, refused to eat animals out of empathy – said, “Racism, economic deprival, dog fighting and cock fighting, bullfighting and rodeos are all cut from the same defective fabric: violence. Only when we have become nonviolent towards all life will we have learned to live well ourselves.”

PETA’s tweet about animal-friendly language sparked a huge response, which was exactly the plan – to inspire discussion. Media outlets

In a victory decades in the making, Chanel agreed to drop all fur and exotic animal skins – including alligator, crocodile, and snake – from its product lines. The company said that it was “becoming increasingly difficult to source exotic skins which match our ethical standards,” following numerous exposés of the fur and exotic skin trades by PETA international affiliates. British department store Selfridges and designer Victoria Beckham, who has never used fur, also pledged to stop selling exotic skins. Chanel, Victoria Beckham Say, ‘See Ya Later, Alligator’

A MESSAGE FROM Ingrid Newkirk PETA’s President W hat’s in a name? When I was born, my grandmother spirited me away and had me christened “Ingrid Elizabeth” – not the names my mother had had in mind at all. Almost 70 years later, PETA UK suggested that a Dorset village calledWool would be better named “VeganWool.” You would have thought the organization had proposed that Prime Minister Theresa May be renamed Little Miss Muffet. The media went bonkers. That short letter to the parish council – which pointed out that UK sheep shearers had been caught on video kicking and beating up lambs – got coverage of wool-industry cruelty in the news and on websites all around the world. Vegan wool became the talk of the town, and wool – the fleece, not the village – got the bad name it deserved. Over the years, PETA and its international affiliates have made animal issues water-cooler conversation by playfully suggesting that Fishkill, New York, change its name to “Fishsave”; urging Sydney, Australia, to rename Egan Street “Vegan Street”; and suggesting that Hamburg, New York, reinvent itself as “Veggieburg” – among other geographical “updates.” Such exercises are a lot of fun – but serious business, too. “What on Earth?” ask the media and the public, allowing PETA to point out what’s objectionable about beating up a sheep just to acquire a coat or killing a cow just to make a sandwich. At least in the case of Fishkill, a name that’s tongue in cheek beats getting a hook in the mouth. As it turns out, PETA supporters aren’t alone in their efforts. At around the same time that PETA UK was explaining why wool (and, by extension, Wool) is associated with horrific cruelty to animals, a pub in York changed its name from “Shoulder of Mutton” to “Hemworth Inn” in order to attract more vegan customers. more, PETA is working to put an end to her cruel stress studies on wild birds, which involve capturing them, feeding them crude oil, and harming them in other ways.

In a victory five years in the making, including a petition that garnered tens of thousands of signatures, PETA UK persuaded bakery giant Greggs to roll out a vegan version of its iconic sausage roll. The internet went wild, with celebrities tweeting their support. A notable exception was Piers Morgan, who was roundly and hilariously mocked, generating even more publicity. More good news: After years of PETA pressure, fast-food chain Carl’s Jr. has a vegan Beyond Burger available at select locations, and Chobani is now offering dairy-free yogurt options. Every day, brands roll out more vegan choices as a result of discussions with PETA and its affiliates, including Hungry Jack’s, Domino’s, and Mad Mex in Australia; Papa John’s, Pizza Hut, and Frankie & Benny’s in the UK; and Pieology and Panera in the US.

PETA has scored another victory for animals and free speech. After the group filed a lawsuit challenging Iowa’s “ag-gag” law and arguing that it violated the First Amendment of the US Constitution, a federal judge agreed, sweeping the statute into the dustbin. PETA investigations have found workers at an Iowa farms kicking pigs in the head, and smashing piglets’ heads against concrete floors, but the state thought the best response was to help the agriculture industry cover up the abuse. Shalin and Frances won’t rest until every food and beverage company gets out of the vivisection business.

Kirin, Sapporo, Other Beer Giants Halt Animal Tests

By Shalin Gala and Dr. Frances Cheng, PETA Laboratory Investigations Department

W ho would have ever imagined that beer was tested on animals? Surely beer companies would have no trouble finding human volunteers willing to down a few brews in the name of science! But that didn’t stop Japanese beer giants Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo, and Suntory from funding experiments on animals. As the first organization to expose animal testing in the alcohol industry, PETA found that these companies – which have a combined share of more than 91% of the Japanese alcoholic beverage market – killed more than 1,800 animals in cruel and unnecessary experiments. Over the Limit Since 2015, Kirin had funded numerous experiments that resulted in the deaths of at least 399 mice and rats. Experimenters force-fed mice fermented milk and injected an inflammatory substance into their brains, and they force-fed others probiotics and injected a flu virus up their noses. Rats were starved and force-fed hop extracts, and electrodes were inserted into their abdomens. At the end of the experiments, the animals were all killed. Asahi – maker of Asahi Super Dry and Peroni beers – killed almost 1,200 mice and rats in nearly a dozen experiments. Suntory – maker of Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, and other spirits – force-fed 190 mice and rats alcohol and other substances, as well as starving and electrocuting them. Sapporo – the best-selling Asian beer in the US – conducted similar experiments on 60 mice and hamsters.

therefore been directly relevant to human health. Suntory did the right thing, telling PETA that “we have decided that we will no longer fund, conduct or commission new projects that use animal testing to establish health claims.” Other brands took notice. Asahi told PETA that it would “not fund, conduct or commission animal tests that are not required by law,” with the understanding that no law explicitly requires animal tests to support marketing claims about food. Soon afterward, Sapporo saw the light. Then Kirin – the second-largest alcoholic-beverage manufacturer in Japan and the ninth-largest one in the world – also agreed to end all experiments on animals for marketing purposes. Other major alcohol companies – including Molson Coors, Bacardi, Heineken, and E. & J. Gallo – have followed suit. PETA has also succeeded in ending many food and beverage brands’ experiments on animals – including Lipton, Ocean Spray, Pepsi, POM Wonderful, Welch’s, Hershey’s, and Barilla pasta. Even strawberry, grape, and raspberry, industry groups were conducting painful and deadly experiments on mice and rats – until PETA put a stop to it.

Henry Bergh, founder of the ASPCA, who also won the first US court case about child abuse, said that if you teach a child not to step on a caterpillar, you do as much for the child as you do for the caterpillar. And Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. rightly noted, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” when he was criticized for objecting to the VietnamWar by those who thought he should restrict his activism to racial discrimination. Bullying and violence aren’t limited to acts against humans any more than they’re limited to acts against certain races or a single gender. Animal rights proponents embrace the words of civil rights activist and feminist Audre Lorde, who said, “There is no such thing as a single issue struggle, because we do not live single-issue lives.” A few years ago, scientists and philosophers issued the Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness, calling on humanity to recognize the rights of other species and saying, “The weight of evidence indicates that humans are not unique in possessing the neurological substrates that generate consciousness. Nonhuman animals, including all mammals and birds, and many other creatures, including octopuses, also possess [them].” If ever there were a time to broaden our objections to discrimination against anyone – whether Muslims, people with disabilities, or any other living beings – it is now. when it affects the group that you identify with the most closely. Believing in justice means believing in principles, understanding how it affects more than just yourself, your family, your nation, your gender, and your race. As Connie Salamone, founder of New York’s Vegetarian Feminists’ Collective said, “It’s hard to argue for women’s rights when your mouth is full of the remains of a small tortured bird.”

important to understand what links all rights movements. In the HBO special I Am an Animal, I read some of PETA’s hate mail out loud. The majority of it, like the nastiness that appears on PETA’s Twitter accounts today, was from self-identified sexists and homophobes, grinning trophy hunters, and people who get a kick out of spelling out hateful messages with the bodies of rabbits and coyotes they’ve shot. They remind us that all serial killers of humans have a history of harming animals. PETA’s gay staffers receive graphic descriptions of sexual acts, and I

WE ARE ALL ANIMALS

Q & A

Acting Like You Care — That's Mark Rylance's Life

Mark Rylance: © Alastair Muir

Distinguished actor, director, and playwright Sir Mark Rylance, who stars in a new PETA video about the exploitation of bears for entertainment, fears the valuable connection among humans, animals, and nature is disappearing. PETA UK: You voiced the giant in The BFG, who is a vegetarian, like you. Sir Mark: It’s very interesting, the cruelty in that story. His brothers are all eating little children, which, if you eat veal or lamb, you are doing the equivalent to animal species. When you stop eating meat, you know that you’re not contributing to the terrible suffering of industrial farming. When I make a decision like that, I take a fuller breath – I feel more connected with the life around me. It’s important just to disinvolve yourself from something you feel is cruel. PETA UK: We love our dogs, but when it comes to other species, there’s often a disconnect. Sir Mark: It’s probably deep in our souls that we want contact with animals. We long for it. But there’s also this ruling cosmology that we’re somehow separate from nature, that we’re not animals ourselves. This idea that we’re somehow separate and superior has caused us a lot of trouble. PETA UK: What can be done to help people make this connection? Sir Mark: Our actions are intimately connected with all forms of life. You have to think holistically: The way to experience animals is to make places for them where we don’t go so they can live as nature intended and not be isolated in a cage or made to perform. We

have to redress the balance, like we’re trying to do between the genders. We need a similar “Time’s Up” movement for animals – we need to look historically at how they’ve been abused and realize they still suffer. PETA UK: You’ve done a lot of work at The Globe Theatre in London. Have we made much progress since Shakespeare’s time? Sir Mark: In that part of London, there were very cruel animal-baiting arenas – the “bear gardens” and other places where, regularly, a bear would be set upon by dogs. Shakespeare even writes about it in his plays. Fortunately, that’s come to an end – things can get better! But there are still many bears being forced to ride bicycles, stand on balls, or wear stupid costumes – practices you would have thought had passed away, but they’re still going on. PETA UK: In 50 years’ time, how do you think we’ll look back at our treatment of animals? Sir Mark: In horror, absolute horror. First of all, of course, the torture is terrible and the poisoning and all that, but putting them in front of a crowd and making them dance is absolutely ridiculous and so cruel. There could be such a richer, more valuable relationship for us with animals. Hopefully, we’ll realize that everything is intimately connected.

WHY THE ‘WHITE STUFF’ ISN’T THE RIGHT STUFF By Zachary Toliver, PETA Blogger

KICKING THE LEATHERHABIT: FROMBALLET SLIPPERS TO COWBOY BOOTS A ttention all dancing queens and sharp dressed men: If you wear leather, you can’t possibly knowwhose skin you’re in. Pigs, goats, sheep, alligators, ostriches, kangaroos, and even dogs and cats are all slaughtered for their skin. Dog leather ends up mislabeled and exported in the form of gloves, belts, cat toys, and other items. PETA Asia’s investigation into a Cambodian slaughterhouse that supplies the international leather industry revealed that workers repeatedly bash cows in the head with sledgehammers and then cut their throats while they’re still conscious. PETA international affiliates have found similar cruelty in every single slaughterhouse they’ve visited. Now, as a result of investigations, corporate negotiations, and hard-hitting campaigns by PETA and its affiliates, the world is embracing vegan leather. Tesla replaced all its leather seats with vegan ones. Ride services Lyft and Uber removed the requirement for leather seats in their high-end contract cars. The US National Collegiate Athletic Association now requires basketball tournaments to use synthetic balls, and major fashion players from Pharrell Williams to Hugo Boss have rolled out animal friendly shoes. Vegan Footwear, FromHyderabad to Helsinki With encouragement from PETA India and the Animal Welfare Board of India, the Central Board of Secondary Education issued an advisory urging all schools in India to require canvas shoes rather than leather ones. I t sounds like a bizarre joke, but it’s real: White nationalists are now using milk emojis and sharing photos of themselves chugging milk to celebrate their “whiteness.” In The New York Times, geneticists try to explain white supremacists’ “reasoning”: Because of a genetic mutation in Europeans, white people are more likely to be able to digest lactose than the majority (65%) of humans, who are lactose intolerant. So white nationalists argue that their minority mutation somehow indicates that they belong to a “master race”! All was fairly quiet on the issue until PETA tweeted out a link to my blog reporting on the Times story and pointing out that milk is actually a symbol of human supremacism. Suddenly, the topic was on everyone’s lips – unlike milk, which had taken on an ugly connotation. Rape, Rob, Repeat When I think about a cow’s violence-filled life – a man’s arm is thrust into her rectum and a syringe is inserted into her vagina to impregnate her, she’s robbed of the milk meant for her baby, and she’s kicked down a ramp to her death once she’s no longer “productive”

– the parallels between the dairy industry and the oppression of human beings are inescapable.

Yes, you tutu can have vegan ballet slippers! Chassé over to the Cynthia King page at PETAMall.com to jeté off with a pair.

PETA has repeatedly uncovered and publicized the dairy industry’s cruelty. A PETA exposé of Heifer Solutions – a Wisconsin farm that raises approximately 1,000 cows at any given time – revealed that a farmhand used a hot iron to burn the horn-producing tissue off calves’ heads without any painkillers. The video shows the youngsters frantically kicking and crying out as smoke rises from their burning flesh. The worker described the torture as “fun” and said that inflicting third-degree burns on calves without relieving their pain made the process “more exciting.” Drinking Milk Supports Oppression It’s no surprise that a toxic subculture glorifying racism, violence, and sexismwould celebrate the dairy industry, but the truth is that all milk drinkers are behaving like supremacists when they buy dairy foods. Supporting an industry that separates mother cows from their beloved calves for the sole purpose of stealing their milk means exercising supremacy, as if humans were entitled to prioritize their fleeting desires over animals’ essential needs. There’s no doubt about it: The “white stuff” is not the right stuff, unless it comes from plants. F rom the very first investigation in 1981 until now, PETA has pioneered freeing primates from laboratories. That first investigation, the Silver Spring monkeys case, led to the first arrest and criminal conviction of an animal experimenter for cruelty to animals in the United States, the first confiscation of abused animals from a laboratory, and the first US Supreme Court victory for animals used in experiments. PETA campaigns have led to the following, and many more, victories for monkeys in laboratories: ✓ The closure of the US government laboratory where, for 30 years, newborn monkeys were taken from their mothers and tormented in useless experiments ✓ The closure of the New England Primate Research Center at Harvard University, after PETA exposed violations of animal-protection laws and protested addicting monkeys to heroin, cocaine, and alcohol ✓ An end to head-bashing experiments on baboons at the University of Pennsylvania ✓ The cancellation of NASA’s plans to expose monkeys to radiation ✓ An end to experiments in which baby monkeys’ eyes were sewn shut at the University of California–Riverside ✓ The Dutch Parliament’s announcement of a plan to phase out the use of monkeys in experiments, after PETA Netherlands delivered 100,000 signatures to legislators ✓ A ban on transporting monkeys to

Studies have shown that monkeys will starve themselves rather than give an electric shock to another monkey they don’t even know. Yet they are deprived of everything in laboratories. Captive primates usually spend their entire lives inside cramped steel cages not much bigger than their own bodies, without bedding, trees to climb, or even companionship. Babies are taken away from their mothers to be experimented on, leaving both heartbroken. There is no excuse for any of this cruelty – humans don’t have the right to lock up, cut open, and kill monkeys. Now, legislators are beginning to agree. US Sen. Cory Booker has introduced the Primate Protection and Research Modernization Act, which would suspend all funding for experiments on monkeys until all areas of primate use are reviewed. Since studies show that experiments on animals are ineffective and even misleading, this would sound the death knell for paralyzing and starving monkeys, inserting electrodes into their brains, keeping them thirsty to make them “cooperate,” and more.

SEE NO EVIL

Everything in Him Screamed ‘ Run , ’ but There Was No Escape

Whipped just for being alive.

Royal River and Air Blade

W orkers wielding sticks goaded the young Thoroughbred named Air Blade up a dim, narrow corridor behind his companion – a filly named Royal River. Suddenly, a metal gate slammed down between them, a shot rang out, and Royal River collapsed in front of Air Blade. Panicking, he stared wide-eyed as his friend’s body was dragged away and hoisted into the air by a single leg. He would be next. PETA’s eyewitness investigation of Nonghyup, South Korea’s largest horse slaughterhouse revealed that this is the real “finish line” for most of the 1,600 horses cast off by the racing industry each year. Many of the animals come from the US or Australia. Some are sons and daughters of Kentucky Derby winners – including Big Brown’s son Dynamic Tank – or the offspring of other American racing legends such as Unbridled and Afleet Alex. Most are only about 4 years old when they’re violently slain. Foal Factories In an attempt to position itself as a major player in global racing, the Korean racing industry imports hundreds of American horses every year to use as breeding machines. The New York–bred horse Sharp Humor, for example, sired 224 foals between 2013 and

2015 in Korea. Already, 85 of those horses are dead – many of them slaughtered for meat. Korea also imports many Australian-bred horses, including Seungja Yechan (“Praise the Winner”), who was sired by the world’s top stallion, Medaglia d’Oro. Praise the Winner was raced four times and then slaughtered so that his flesh could be sold for a few dollars a pound. PETA has revealed that at the Korea Racing Authority’s (KRA) breeding facility and on private farms, multiple times a day, stallions mount mares, who are held in place by workers using twitches – rope loops twisted tightly around their upper lips and causing pain if they try to move. The American broodmare Catch Me Later was forced to breed even though her left hind foot was so painful that she couldn’t bear weight on it and limped badly. One former racer named Annika Queen was forced to nurse two foals despite suffering from laminitis so severe that she could barely walk. A farmmanager said that when the foals were weaned, she would be killed. From Track to Table Even though Koreans bet over US$8 billion annually on horse races, the industry makes almost no provision for the animals’ retirement after their racing or breeding days are over. Instead, it pumps money into “agricultural development” – industry-speak for farms that fatten up horses for meat. In 2012, the KRA’s chair

even stated that “horse meat is good, and we will work on ways of encouraging people to eat it in the future.”

On one farm, PETA’s eyewitnesses found dozens of dirty horses confined to small manure-filled pens and stalls. One horse was gravely ill: She was thin, missing hair, covered with sores, and suffering from an ulcerated eye. No Winners at This ‘Finish Line’ When they’re no longer useful to the industry, the horses are sent to slaughter. PETA’s footage shows workers hitting terrified animals in the face with sticks in order to force them off transport trucks, up a chute, and into a kill box designed for cattle – and then shooting them in the head as they thrash in fear. An official with Korea’s Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency told The Korea Observer, “Things may get a little messy if they do not pass out at the first blow.” One Florida-bred horse named Naha was killed the same day as her daughter, one almost immediately after the other.
