Bulls Aren’t Bicycles, Camels Aren’t Cars: PETA Gets Tourists Off Animals’ Backs

C amels can survive harsh desert in their humps; their nostrils are built-in dehumidifiers, cooling their exhaled breath to prevent water loss; and their beautiful long eyelashes stop sand from blowing into their eyes. But they can’t adapt to the cruelty humans inflict on them. People who take selfies atop a camel’s back must reckon with the suffering it represents . At top Egyptian tourist sites, PETA has shown saddle and nose peg sores on animals toiling in the blistering heat without food, water, or shade. Horses used for rides are beaten bloody even when they fall, and camels are forced to “walk” on their knees on the stony ground and are even dragged, bellowing in pain, behind trucks. There is no retirement: When their bodies wear out, they are sold and slaughtered in hideous ways for their flesh and skin. At Petra, in Jordan, a PETA-supported veterinary clinic provides care for the poor donkeys who haul tourists up 900 stone steps to a monastery, while the horse carriages we have complained bitterly about are now banned. In Santorini, Greece, we protest vigorously against donkey rides up a long, winding hill under the blazing summer sun. In Delhi, thanks to PETA India, environments. When resources are scarce, they live off the fat stored

horses used to haul lumber, steel, and machinery as well as joyriders have been replaced by electric carts that PETA’s Global Compassion Fund helps subsidize. One powerful way to end this abuse is to ban animal rides – and PETA is working on that. AdventureWomen – named one of the “15 Best Tour Operators” by Travel + Leisure magazine

We’re keeping pressure on the Egyptian, Jordanian, and Indian governments to switch to electric carts, and supporters of PETA entities in the US, the UK, and continental Europe have been protesting outside consulates. It sometimes takes legislation or a court case. In 2015, PETA India won a ban on the “traditional” Victoria horse carriages used on Mumbai’s horses. Then PETA India achieved a ban on bullock carts used to haul oil in that city. Now, following PETA India’s complaints, the Calcutta High Court has ordered busy streets, after showing malnourished and wounded

If you find the idea of walking cheeses revolting, you might skip a visit to the farm in France where Camembert originates. It gives tours – busloads of them – of the inside of the “factory.” You can browse photos and read about Camembert’s history, and a window allows you to watch the milk swirling about in a giant vat. I went out back. That’s where I found the cows standing in their own manure. Their urine splashed up their legs onto their teats, the real origin of that cheese. They are slaughtered after a few years of being milked, their only utility in life. Here’s something else that’s revolting: Cheese contains the very same bacteria ( Brevibacterium ) found between your toes. It does! And here’s the most revolting fact of all: Cows’ babies are unceremoniously wrenched away from them by their ears or a leg or are tossed into a wheelbarrow, so scared their eyes almost pop out. That should be enough for any kind person to say, “Soy cheese, please!”

Big Wins Under the Big Top PETA India works with local authorities to crack down on circuses that use camels and other animals illegally. Following the group’s complaints, all animals – a camel, a pony, three dogs, a baby monkey, and a goat – were seized from the Karur Latha Circus and police registered formal complaints against the Great Indian Circus and Jumbo Circus for forcing camels and other animals to perform tricks not approved by the Animal Welfare Board of India. In the US, after more than 100,000 PETA supporters took action and celebrities like TLC’s Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas spoke out, UniverSoul Circus – which had exploited camels, elephants, tigers, and other animals for decades – went animal-free. Now our sights are set on Shrine circuses that still use animals, and we’re making progress. After hearing from PETA, award-winning home-building and design company Jagoe Homes pulled the plug on its significant sponsorship of the Hadi Shrine Circus and expressed the hope that “all animals will be out of the circus someday.” Polyram Plastic Industries also cut ties with the Hadi Shrine Circus and Sherwin-Williams advised its local business groups not to sponsor the circus in the future, both after hearing from us. A fzal , Unmukt , and three other camels were spotted in the holy town of Varanasi, India, where they were being prepared for an illegal religious sacrifice: Their legs were to be bound, their mouths

But that misery was soon behind them. The camels walked into a truck bed, lay down on the straw, and were taken to a PETA-supported Animal Rahat sanctuary in Maharashtra, where they received food, medical care, rest, and TLC. Now they’re enjoying sanctuary life, including grooming sessions, holiday feasts, and the company of other residents. PETA entities around the world are working to liberate camels from abusive situations, exposing the cruelty of camel rides and races, shutting down animal-exploiting circuses, and more. Let’s Put the Brakes on Animal Rides As in Egypt (see the cover story), PETA is pushing authorities in the “Lost City” of Petra, Jordan, to replace animal rides with electric vehicles. More than 1,300 camels, donkeys, and horses haul tourists in the sweltering desert heat, and there’s no shade for them and usually no water, as the one water trough is commonly empty. Young touts routinely whip and beat the animals, even hitting them in the head with rocks. Though no longer in imminent danger, the camels were exhausted and in terrible shape. They had varying degrees of liver and kidney damage as well as bacterial infections. Two, including Afzal, also had gaping, maggot-infested wounds caused by wooden pegs that had been inserted into holes piercing their nostrils. The camels’ owners had tied ropes to the pegs, which they used to control them.

Harvard University’s Margaret Livingstone has spent 40 years (and more than US$32 million) tormenting animals in useless experiments. She tears baby monkeys away from their mothers and sews their eyes shut or forces them to wear strobe-effect goggles for up to 18 months. Steel posts are surgically implanted in many of the infants’ heads or electrodes are put into their brains. The findings? Being blinded for the first months of life interferes with the development of vision and the brain. Physicians and Others Are Waking Up to the Waste As a result of PETA entities’ campaigns against these and other cruel neurological experiments – which have included exposés, lawsuits, scientific critiques, ads, protests, and petitions – many physicians, researchers, lawmakers, and patients have joined the push for change. Following PETA Germany’s work, that country’s health authority rejected a permit application from Andreas Kreiter at the University of Bremen to continue his invasive brain experiments on macaques, concluding that they were “ethically not justifiable.” PETA’s global initiative to end near-drowning experiments on mice and other small animals (which tell us nothing about human depression) has resulted in a wave of bans, including recent commitments from Australia’s Macquarie University , the University of Western Australia, Colombia’s Universidad del Valle , and more than a dozen UK research schools. BAFTA-winning actor Richard E Grant teamed up with PETA UK to call for an end to the forced swim test, and a dozen cross-party members of the UK Parliament urged the Home Office to abolish it. P eople who suffer from neurological or psychiatric conditions are desperate for relief. But medications to treat these disorders that are deemed “safe and effective” in animal experiments have among the highest failure rates in human drug trials because they don’t work and/or are dangerous . More than 1,000 drugs that seemed successful in experiments intended to mimic human strokes in animals failed to help stroke patients. Yet many neuroscience experimenters continue to torment animals in a futile attempt to someday extrapolate the results to humans, who are biologically vastly different. PETA entities are exposing the shoddy science and horrific cruelty that pass for much “neurological research” and pushing for the adoption of superior, human-relevant methods. 90 Years and Millions of Dollars Later, Not a Single Treatment! Many experiments targeted by PETA have been going on for decades at an enormous cost – despite failing to benefit human health 100% of the time . Giving up cheese may seem like a Sisyphean task, but we’re here to tell you it’s not. ‘Dairy It’s Crack’!

lot more. It goes down the collection tube – and if you consume dairy, you’re swallowing it with every glass of milk, every scoop of ice cream, and every sliver of cheese. That’s not the only problem with cheese. It’s 70% fat. If it were any worse, it would be Vaseline. And with all the salt added in the cheese factory, cheddar has more sodium ounce per ounce than potato chips! Crying Out for a Queso Fix Cheese smells like old socks, but people get hooked on the stuff. Why did Katherine love it so much? The reason is something called casomorphins. Casein, the protein that’s in milk, breaks apart in your digestive tract to release morphine-like chemicals that go to your brain and hook to the very same receptors that morphine or heroin would attach to. The most potent of these chemicals is morphiceptin. It has about one-tenth the brain-binding power of pharmacy-grade morphine. So it’s not strong enough to get you arrested, but it is strong enough to get you hooked. Break Free – for Cows’ Sake and Yours We can’t ignore the ethical issues of dairy production. Impregnating a cow doesn’t involve roses and Barry Manilow records. It’s done with artificial insemination. Workers insert an arm into a cow’s rectum and a metal rod to deliver semen into her vagina. These animals are not volunteers; they have no choice. They are going to be impregnated whether they want to be or not. And they bellow at the assault on their bodies.

Nine months later, the mother cow has a calf. And the baby is clumsy and awkward and cute as can be. But the farmworkers say, “Wait a minute – this is a dairy. If the calf drinks the mom’s milk, what are we going to sell?” Well, every dairy farm has an implement that solves this problem. It’s called a wheelbarrow. They pick up the calf by the chest, plunk them in the wheelbarrow, and carry them away. And the mother cow vehemently objects. She follows and cries out and effectively says, “That is my baby you’re taking away!” But there’s nothing she can do. And this is the way it is on every dairy farm that gave you every piece of cheese you ever ate.

Cheese was high on her list, so a friend gave her an entire case of 48 mac-and-cheese dinners. She ate them for 48 days straight. Katherine gained some weight. She also developed a painful condition called endometriosis, which is when cells that normally line the uterus escape into the abdomen. Her doctor’s solution: a hysterectomy. A Kinder Generation of Guards Today’s King’s Guard members are young and engaged, and many reject the notion that living, feeling beings are mere “fabric” for humans’ use. In an op-ed published in The Independent , one guard explained that wearing a fur cap tarnishes the uniform and “feels cruel and inhumane.” Members of Parliament agree: Seventy-five of them supported a motion calling on the MoD to recognize that using real fur “is not in line with the UK Government’s commitment to have and promote the highest standards of animal welfare.” Be Part of It! Visit PETA.org.au/StephenFry to watch the new video exposé, and share it with everyone you know. Then use every outlet at your disposal – social media posts, letters, protests, phone calls – to send the message to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the MoD that the time is long overdue to transition to superior, humane faux-fur caps.

T he hungry bear could smell the honey, cookies, and bagels and moved cautiously toward the enticing aroma. Suddenly, he felt enormous pain: A razor-sharp arrow had torn into his flesh. He struggled through the agony, trying to flee. Eventually, he collapsed and died. The next morning, hunters used dogs to track the bear’s blood and scent. They were happy to have “bagged” him: “He’s a big ’un!” He was skinned, his head likely a trophy for someone’s wall, his beautiful coat likely sent to the auction house where the British Ministry of Defence ’s (MoD) capmakers buy bear fur to be made into the King’s Guard ’s caps. If a bear killed for a cap was a mother, her cubs would be doomed to die of starvation – slowly and in confusion at the loss of their mother – the moment she was shot. For nearly two centuries, the MoD has waged war on black bears – for each cap worn as a strictly ceremonial headdress by the King’s Guard, a bear is cruelly killed, not counting those who are never found after fleeing and who die in the woods or the cubs who don’t know how to feed themselves. A new PETA video investigation narrated by actor Stephen Fry shows black bears being shot, disemboweled, and dismembered by ”sport” hunters in Canada, where the King’s Guard’s bearskins originate. To add to the horror, high-powered crossbows are used, as hunters say they heighten the challenge. Crossbow hunting has been illegal in the UK for over 40 years, due in part to the suffering it inflicts on animals, yet the MoD buys caps made of pelts from animals killed this way. The Ministry’s Lies The MoD long claimed that the bear pelts are a byproduct of a “cull” overseen by Canadian authorities. Yet federal and provincial Canadian

governments have confirmed that no such culls exist. The Canadian government issues “tags” to hunting enthusiasts who are then free to bait and kill an allotted number of bears for recreation and sell their skins. The MoD has now shifted to aligning itself with Furmark, a commercial fur industry accreditation scheme that exists solely to defend the interests of fur farmers and hunters and to promote the (rapidly declining) use of fur in fashion.

The fact is that fabulous, free faux fur is there for the taking. The MoD purchased 498

• Whisk the jam so that it’s soft and spreadable. Using a small palette knife, spread it over the base cake almost to the edge. • Place whole raspberries along the perimeter of the base cake, leaving a raspberry-size gap between each one. • Pipe alternating dots of the whipped cream between each raspberry. Then pipe it in a spiral in the middle of the cake and out to the edge so the cake is covered in a generous layer of whipped cream. • Place the other cake, domed side up, on top and dust with icing sugar. Top with a single raspberry and serve immediately. Berry Jam Makes 245 g

METHOD • Place an oven rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 350°F/180°C. Line the bases of two 20-cm round springform pans with baking parchment. • In a large bowl, gently whisk together the flour, cornflour, caster sugar, muscovado sugar, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, and salt. • Place the oil, soy milk, vinegar, vanilla extract, and sweet potato in a blender and blend until smooth. • Add the blended liquid to the dry mix and whisk until smooth. • Divide the batter evenly between the lined pans. Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until the top is smooth and golden and springs back when lightly pressed. • Cool the cakes in the pans on a wire rack. Once cooled, carefully run a sharp paring knife along the inside edge of each pan and gently release the cakes. • Trim the domed top off one of the cakes to make a flat top (discard the excess). Place the trimmed cake on a plate, trimmed-size up, for the base of the cake.

BAKING A DIFFERENCE

TVBB took blood from animals who were elderly, emaciated, injured, medicated, or sick – potentially compromising the health of both the unwilling “donors” and the recipients of the blood, who are often critically ill or injured. Freeing the Forced ‘Donors’ TVBB isn’t the only such facility. In 2017, PETA revealed that The Pet Blood Bank in Texas kept 151 greyhounds in solitary confinement inside dirt-floored pens in an old turkey shed and severely neglected them. Dogs had severe dental infections and painful open wounds, and they were reduced to spinning in endless circles and crying out in despair. Under pressure from us, The Pet Blood Bank closed and released the dogs for adoption. The following year, we investigated Hemopet, a canine blood bank in California that warehoused approximately 200 greyhounds discarded by the racing industry. Since then, a landmark bill was passed, thanks to PETA. Now, veterinarians in that state can dispense blood donated by healthy dogs who live in loving homes instead of blood from captive canines. Cats, crammed by the dozens into pens with nothing to do and no space to themselves, climbed the chain-link walls out of frustration. Be Part of It! After hearing from PETA and thousands of supporters, PetVet Care Centers – which operates more than 350 veterinary hospitals across the US – dropped TVBB as a supplier. Visit PETA.org/Blood to urge Mars Inc. , which owns BluePearl and VCA Animal Hospitals , to obtain blood only from cats and dogs who live in loving homes and are volunteered by their guardians to periodically “donate.” And please share this article with your veterinarian and ask them where they get their blood from. warmth of a home or the love of a family, TVBB finally euthanized Squiggy – releasing him from the loneliness and repeated poking and bleeding. But hundreds of other dogs and cats remain at the facility, condemned to the same miserable existence. Never-Ending Needle Pricks and Blood Draws A PETA undercover investigation into TVBB found that dogs’ blood was taken beginning when they were only 6 months old. Most animals at the facility remain there for life – deprived of joy, comfort, affection, and even a blanket to lie on. Even those whose blood was no longer taken were warehoused indefinitely, including elderly cats who were confined to a dismal pen that workers callously called the “stairway to heaven.” PETA Reveals Hundreds of Dogs and Cats Bled and Caged Until Death Where Does Your Vet Get Transfusion Blood From? Lay workers with no veterinary credentials administered vaccines, anesthetized animals, stitched up wounds, and performed “dentals.” A worker extracted eight blackened teeth from a dog named Foster, who struggled to breathe under anesthesia. Others’ teeth were left to rot in their mouths.

her. The investigator also rescued three cats in bad condition.

No Comfort, No Escape Dogs at TVBB spent more than 23 hours a day – and all day on Sundays – in small, barren, deafeningly loud kennels. Many had pressure sores and growths from lying on hard, grated floors. Cats, crammed by the dozens into pens with nothing to do and no space to themselves, climbed the chain-link walls out of frustration. Stressful conditions led to fights among dogs. Howard was attacked at least three times by his kennelmate, and after Clara and Parker fought, they were still let out together, resulting in a fight that left Clara with a severe leg wound that required staples. Workers Paid Blood Money for Strays TVBB obtained its victims by breeding them or acquiring them as strays or through “free to a good home” ads. A manager offered workers $200 for each cat, saying, “Where you get [them] from is not my business.” Workers brought in homeless animals and kittens they found on Facebook. Sick Animals’ Blood Sold to ‘Help’ Veterinary Patients Some animals tested positive for contagious conditions, including feline herpesvirus and mycoplasma, but TVBB eventually used their blood anyway. Workers drew blood from dogs like Baxter, who apparently had bone cancer and who died alone in his kennel, and cats such as Chelsea, who had lost more than 10% of her bodyweight in three weeks.

Boomer’s blood was drawn approximately every three weeks.

My son’s pediatrician is pushing me to give him cow’s milk for calcium. Help! – Calci umm …

Push back! Your son’s doctor likely didn’t get any nutrition training in medical school and is parroting what they’ve heard in dairy ads. The fact is that children don’t need a cow’s breast milk any more than calves need yours. Cows make milk that’s designed by nature for their babies, who have four stomachs and gain hundreds of pounds in months. And catch this: As proteins in cow’s milk break down, they produce acid. And what do our bodies use to neutralize acid? Calcium. It takes all the calcium in a glass of milk plus more from our own stores to digest that glass of milk. So consuming dairy actually robs us of calcium! Far healthier and more digestible calcium sources include leafy greens, edamame, tofu, white beans, sesame seeds, and fortified plant milks and orange juice.

Many parents (including me) have raised strong, healthy vegan kids – and more and more doctors support this choice. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine offers a list at PCRM.org/FindADoctor . Oh, and cow’s milk is one of the primary causes of food allergies among children. Disturbingly, recent research published in the British Medical Journal also found that cow’s milk is now the leading cause of fatal anaphylaxis in children under 16. Cows are cool! I and many other parents have been right there with you. Fortunately, there are loads of vegan cheese and milk options that are kid-approved. Chao and Violife make nondairy cheese slices in a variety of flavors, and Daiya ’s mac ’n’ cheese is top-notch. Follow Your Heart ’s shreds are great on pizza. When my son was younger, I used soy milk on his favorite healthy cereals, and it makes a great base for fruit smoothies (sneak in veggies!). He also liked the vegan versions of kid classics like hot dogs, burgers, chicken nuggets, and deli slices. You can find more inspiration at PETAKids.com/Food and PETA.org.au/Recipes .

SPEED TESTS ARE TREACHEROUS Carnage for 2-Year-Olds at Thoroughbred Auctions KILLING YOUNG HORSES A

PETA’s Lifesaving Plan Horses are not machines, and horse racing won’t survive being plagued by fatalities, drug scandals, and negative public opinion forever. But to reduce as much suffering as possible right now, PETA has presented instantly implementable plans to the industry, including persuading racing officials to launch the first-ever industry-supported retirement program to help prevent the slaughter of ex-racers, called the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA). We also proposed a first-of-its kind technology that asks bettors to donate a portion of their winnings to the TAA, which is now in place at horse racing wagering terminals. The funds it has generated have helped prevent many horses from being sold at auction and sent to slaughter.

Now, PETA has submitted a creative plan to major auction companies and top breeders, trainers, owners, and other horse racing insiders. It proposes that under tack events be run at longer distances that correspond with horses’ training for actual races, rather than short sprints that are more likely to leave horses injured or dead, and moving trials from spring to the fall, when young horses are more physically developed.

PETA released video footage of yet another horse, “Hip #1041,” who was killed at a different under tack show after an excruciatingly painful injury left her dragging both rear legs. And an undercover video that PETA

released previously shows horses forced to run so fast in speed tests that their bones broke and their aortas burst. One horse suffered a fatal cardiac event while being forced to sprint in extreme heat. From Under Tack to Undertaker Trainers admit that these hideous events don’t predict a horse’s future success and that they put the animals in grave danger. They’re held only to sway gullible buyers who salivate at the thought of acquiring a

“Hip #130” was forced to run at top speed. After sustaining a catastrophic leg injury, she reared up in panic before being given a lethal injection. A blue screen was put up to block the carnage.

#130 reared up as trainers surrounded her. Her racing “career” – and her life – ended there on the track, with a lethal injection in the neck. PETA’s undercover investigator managed to capture it all on video. Lives Cut Short for Reckless Sprints Hip #130 was one of thousands of young Thoroughbreds forced to run at a breakneck (and break-leg) pace in what a former president of the New York Thoroughbred Breeders called “idiotic speed tests.” Known as “under tack shows” in the industry, these dangerous displays involve forcing fragile young horses – whose bones, tendons, and muscles aren’t yet fully developed – to run faster than they’ll ever run in any race, all to impress buyers at auctions and raise the purchase price.

Kentucky Derby contender. Condemning the “stupidity” of forcing horses to run 1-furlong (1/8-mile) sprints in less than 10 seconds, billionaire racehorse owner Mike Repole said that the events should be banned. For horses who advance to racing, the dangers are far from over. In the lead-up to last year’s Kentucky Derby alone, 12 horses died after suffering horrific breakdowns or because of unexplained causes. And even the “winners” eventually lose: When they can no longer outrun the competition, many are sent to slaughter in Canada or Mexico. Others are sold to the racing and breeding industry in South Korea, which eventually slaughters nearly every horse for meat. (Turn the page for more about what PETA has uncovered there.)
