billion in 2020 alone – even though 95% of new drugs that test safe and effective in animals fail in human trials . Collins has known for a decade that experiments on animals do not lead to cures, yet he staunchly defended them, as his e-mails obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show. With Collins out, round two is to push for a director who will embrace state-of-the-art, animal-free scientific research. PETA’s giant inflatable T. rex has been tailing President Joe Biden
dimensional tissue models that can deliver desperately needed treatments and cures.
The RMD is already catching on: Members of the European Parliament who reviewed it enthusiastically voted in favor of developing an action plan to phase out animal experiments. In the US, Sens. Cory Booker and Rand Paul – along with Reps. Vern Buchanan, Brendan Boyle, and others – cosponsored the bipartisan FDA Modernization Act, which would end an antiquated rule from 1938 requiring that drugs be tested on animals before going to human trials.

and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden everywhere – including the White House, Rome, and even the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Scotland – demanding that the next director not be another “dinosaur.” And, in December, Dr. Lawrence Tabak was appointed interim director of NIH, an encouraging sign that the permanent director will support a modern approach to science. … In With PETA’s Research Modernization Deal PETA is determined to drag experimenters out of the scientific Stone Age via its groundbreaking Research Modernization Deal (RMD), which outlines a clear path forward for ending experiments on animals and implementing animal-free, human-relevant methods, such as organs-on-chips, computer modeling, and three

Out With the ‘Dino’ … Following an intense PETA campaign, NIH Director Francis Collins called it quits! Under Collins’ directorship, NIH squandered nearly half its massive budget tormenting animals in experiments – $19.6

W hat does nearly drowning terrified mice teach us about depression in humans? Nothing . What does pouring alcohol down newborn rats’ throats and shocking rats’ feet reveal about child abuse? Zilch . PETA is using cold, hard facts to dismantle the myth that torturing animals helps humans – because it doesn’t . Fighting for the Rights of Rats and Mice Take the widely debunked “forced swim test,” in which mice or other animals are usually dosed with a test drug, and made to frantically tread water to the point of exhaustion inside inescapable beakers:
Blowing the Whistle on NIH Worldwide, no entity funds more cruel
Nearly 20 companies and universities worldwide have banned it, following outreach by PETA scientists as well as protests, PETA-proposed shareholder resolutions, and e-mails and calls from tens of thousands of supporters. University of Delaware (UD) experimenter Tania Roth has subjected animals to many other twisted tests – from the aforementioned alcohol and electrocution experiments to one that involved restraining a rat inside a clear box while a cat licked food off the top. PETA is demanding that UD end these tests and is calling on the US National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to stop funding them.
experiments than the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). But the agency can’t even abide by its own animal care guidelines in its own laboratories. PETA has uncovered evidence that 20 mice died after being injected with too much insulin, and a mouse was scalded to death in a cage that was run through a high-temperature washer. In a high-profile opinion piece that ran in the Miami Herald , PETA exposed appalling violations – including animals injected with the wrong
