ATipping Point: PETA’s PlanWill ToppleAnimal Experiments
From its inception, PETA has been pushing to overcome experimenters’ inertia and stubborn adherence to the idea espoused by Descartes – who nailed dogs to boards and dismissed their cries as the squeaking of machinery – that it’s acceptable to imprison animals in steel cages for life to endure all manner of horrors, deprived of everything that would make their lives meaningful or comfortable, then kill them. PETA has closed labs , liberated hundreds of animals , and provoked funding cuts for animal experiments . PETA entities are persuading institutions worldwide – from AstraZeneca to the University of Adelaide to the FDA in Taiwan – to end tests on animals, including the “forced swim test,” in which small animals are dropped into containers of water, and forced to swim for their lives. Now we’re out to turn the whole system upside down and dislodge all the animal experimenters with our plan to modernize research with state-of-the-art methods that are effective and 100% humane.
in Congress to end the mandate that human drugs be tested on animals. Now for the rest of the world!
Real Science PETA Science Consortium International has advanced cutting-edge, non-animal research by helping to fund the development of a three dimensional lung tissue model and human-derived antibodies to treat diphtheria . These will prevent rats from being forced to inhale toxins and horses from being injected with diphtheria toxin and forced to undergo blood withdrawals. Now, let’s get all animals out of labs.

I asked to see the labs. This made the faculty uncomfortable. I kept pushing, saying, “Nothing to hide, I’m sure!” Finally, they decided I could perhaps see the lab housing the students’ “pet” dogs. The facility consisted of a roomwith neon ceiling lights, cement floors, whitewashed walls, and chainlink runs. No toys, grass, sunshine, or fresh air – nothing to provide any comfort or joy. “What are they used for, and do they ever get out of these cells?” I asked. I was told they were let into the aisle every day during cleaning and that they were “only used once a year, at exam time, to show students how to take blood and whatnot.” We continued talking. How could the school justify imprisoning these dogs in such bleak living conditions year-round? There were other ways for the students to learn: for example, in a veterinarian’s office, observing dogs who could go right home afterward. With persistence, I got the beagles, Linda and Kim, released. Their whirling stopped within the first week of their transfer from cement flooring to a living room couch and the soft grass of a real yard. It took three and a half years of trying to get an answer from Drexel University regarding modifying its policy on animal experiments, but eventually the chancellor wrote that the College of Medicine “has been using computer modeling and simulation rather than live subjects … for over three years.” Change was possible after all – it usually is, if you push hard enough. Following discussions with PETA, Uni-President (Asia’s largest food company) and Swire Coca-Cola Taiwan (one of Taiwan’s leading soft drink manufacturers and bottling partner of Coca-Cola) banned all animal tests not required by law. Then, Yakult Co., Ltd. – known for its probiotic drinks – ended all of its voluntary animal tests after being formally included in the ban that its parent company, Yakult Honsha Co., Ltd., imposed after discussions with PETA. These victories will prevent countless rats, mice, and hamsters from being force-fed, forced to inhale chemicals, starved, and injected with drugs.
SeaQuest – the notorious aquarium and petting zoo based primarily in shopping malls – won’t be acquiring more sloths at its Las Vegas site, following the deaths of two sloths there in nine months. PETA asked local officials to investigate the abusive outfit and deny any future requests to obtain more sloths after records revealed that the animals – both named Flash – died under similar suspicious circumstances. And just days after PETA wrote to the North Dakota attorney general to report that SeaQuest CEO Vince Covino’s bid to open an inhumane operation in the state was based on lies, Covino backed out of his plans.

facility that is demonstrating success at preventing critical animal welfare issues,” an understatement.
Sickness, Death, Contamination A damning exposé in the Arizona Republic and USA Today dropped bombshells – including that deadly diseases run rampant at the WaNPRC’s supposedly “pathogen-free” breeding facility. Monkeys there routinely become sick and die from Valley fever and have tested positive for campylobacter, shigella, salmonella, and cryptosporidia as well as for the pathogens that cause Chagas disease, tuberculosis, and even cholera. A toxic waste site just 550 yards from the facility has contaminated the wells and soil with perchlorates and lead. Injuries and Incompetence In PETA’s investigation, injuries and deaths at WaNPRC are described in detail. Amacaque died of dehydration because the water line to her cage hadn’t been connected. Amonkey strangled to death when he became entangled in a chain attached to his cage. Amonkey who hadn’t been properly fasted prior to surgery went into respiratory arrest and choked to death on his own vomit. Two stressed macaques escaped, and both incurred injuries to their hands and fingers. Findings from experiments on these contaminated monkeys are compromised before they even start.
Take Action Now Visit PETA.org/WaNPRC to demand the closure of the WaNPRC and the release of
the monkeys to sanctuaries, where they can finally experience security, comfort, and respect. You can help PETA succeed! Do it for Dorothy.
NIH Director Francis Collins has known since at least 2013 that sepsis – an extreme and often fatal response to infection – affects humans and mice differently. Some 150 drugs have treated sepsis in mice, but every single one has failed in human trials. Collins has acknowledged, “No wonder drugs designed for the mice failed in humans: They were, in fact, treating different conditions!” Yet NIH has continued to squander tens of millions of dollars to induce sepsis in mice, causing them to go into shock, experience multiple organ failure, and die in agony. PETA Sues to Stop Sepsis Experiments What PETA Alleges PETA’s groundbreaking lawsuit against Collins, NIH, and others alleges that funding sepsis tests on animals violates the agencies’ legal obligations to reduce the number of animals used in experiments, minimize the suffering of animals, and fund research for the benefit of human health. Following a PETA campaign, NIH has stopped funding sepsis experiments by an experimenter at the University of Pittsburgh, who punctured the intestines of mice so that feces would leak into their abdomens. PETA’s lawsuit pushes NIH to invest in non animal, human-relevant sepsis research that is truly lifesaving. Go to PETA.org/Sepsis to help.

Dorothy (like the monkey shown in this photo) was taken from her cage to another room and locked into a “restraint chair.”
A t 22 years old, Dorothy was a senior citizen in macaque years when she ended up at the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC) at the University of Washington (UW). She had been used as a breeding machine for 20 years – all her babies had been taken away from her. And now, instead of enjoying her golden years perched in a tree, surrounded by her daughters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters, Dorothy found herself all alone, in a cold steel cage.
lock her into a restraint chair. She was kept thirsty so she would cooperate by looking at a screen for hours at a time just to get a sip of water. To control her even more, they drilled a hole into her skull and implanted a titanium post so that they could prevent her from moving her head. Driven to despair, she pulled out nearly all her hair and began to waste away. Dorothy got sicker and sicker under the strain of unrelenting experimentation, until she was just a shadow of her former self. After she died, her necropsy showed that she was riddled with cancer. They claim that their experiments will lead to vaccines for human diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and Zika. Yet in 60 years of inflicting abject misery on monkeys, they have not succeeded. For nearly two years, PETA researchers and scientists combed through tens of thousands of university and federal records, talked to multiple insiders, and even filed open records lawsuits to uncover the WaNPRC’s dirty deeds. Nursing Mothers Go Hungry US Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors told company management to feed the dogs through their last nursing day, but hungry mother dogs were routinely denied anything to eat during their final two days with their puppies – and a supervisor instructed workers to lie about it. PETA took its evidence to the government, and USDA officials inspected the beagle supplier and opened a new investigation. In the meantime, the USDA released three damning inspection reports citing Envigo for 26 violations of the Animal Welfare Act from an inspection that took place in July while PETA’s undercover investigation was underway. Yet Envigo is still breeding and selling dogs today. More suffering awaits puppies who survive this hellish place. They will never set foot outdoors or experience 9 time outside a cage except while being experimented on. And all their suffering and death is for nothing: A staggering 90% of basic research, most of which involves animals, fails to lead to treatments for humans. You Can Help Save Dogs Like Samson PETA’s investigator found a legal way to get Samson out. Today, the brave old warrior is healing physically and emotionally as well as finally enjoying being a dog. size of football fields. Denied any opportunity to run, play, and simply act like dogs – and deprived of a comfortable bed or a family to love them – the beagles paced, jumped, and barked frantically. The din of hundreds of distressed cries must have been unbearable for the dogs trapped there, given their extremely sensitive hearing. Soaked and Shaking Samson wagged his tail whenever he saw PETA’s investigator but cowered when approached. Workers routinely blasted his and the other dogs’ cages with water from high-pressure hoses – even those of nursing mother dogs and their puppies, who were unable to move out of the way, leaving them soaking and traumatized. The workers tattooed puppies’ ears with needled clamps and no pain relief. Dozens of puppies were tattooed three times – first with the wrong number, the second time with an “X” over each mistake, and then again with the intended tattoo. When dogs were sick or injured, lay workers guessed at the diagnosis and treatment. One supervisor inserted a needle straight into a puppy’s head in a crude attempt to drain fluid from a wound, again – without anesthetics. When the puppy wailed, the supervisor tried to hold her mouth shut. Workers cut prolapsed
tissue from dogs’ eyes, stitched up dogs’ prolapsed penises, and even cut puppies out of their sedated mothers’ wombs (then killed their mothers).

Born and raised in this miserable prison, Samson sired an estimated 200 puppies, who were shipped off to endure painful, deadly experiments – to be poisoned, cut open, burned, and psychologically tormented. Each cat has preferences. The PETA cats love corn cob–based litter, which is easy to clean. Other cats like alfalfa, grass, or coconut-hull litters. Some cats prefer covered litterboxes, while others like theirs open. Placement matters, too: Make sure the box has an escape route and is situated in a quiet area. Experiment to see what your cat prefers. “I don’t like this set-up.”

“I resent being banished.”
“My joints ache, and I can’t make it to the litterbox in time.”
Never allow yourself or anyone else to push your cat off the couch or bed or to say the equivalent of “Go away,” even during intimate moments. Not only is it rude, it’s also sure to hurt your cat’s feelings. And cats who have been banished may resort to sending you a message that you can’t ignore – by eliminating in that very spot.
Is your cat “thinking outside the box”? Your feline family member is sending you an important message – never ignore it. Here’s what Kitty may be trying to tell you, plus other tips from Ingrid Newkirk’s “cat guardian’s bible.”
You wouldn’t force your elderly grandparents to
descend the basement stairs every time they needed to use the bathroom, would you? Don’t make your aging kitty do so, either. Keep litterboxes near high-traffic
New England Patriots linebacker Matt Judon got serious in a new PETA TV spot reminding fans, “New England winters are no joke. They can be deadly for dogs left outside.” He knows that PETA fieldworkers intervene in behalf of thousands of chained or penned dogs every year , providing them with clean water, food, lightweight tie-outs to replace chains, and affection that they would never otherwise receive, as well as providing them with insulated doghouses and straw bedding so they don’t freeze to death. “My dogs are part of my family – and I would never leave my family outside in the cold,” says Judon. “So please, keep your dogs inside, and show them the love and respect that they show you.” New England Patriots’ Matt Judon Knows Dogs Belong Inside
areas. And if your cat likes enclosed litterboxes, buy or make an attractive litterbox cabinet that can stay in your main living area. Cabinets can reduce litter tracking and also prevent dogs from “foraging” in the box.
“I’m in pain.”
“I’m stressed.” Changes like moving, travel, illness, or even a new perfume on their human can cause sensitive animals like cats profound anxiety. Take the time to understand what’s upsetting Kitty, and change it if you can. Products like Bach’s Rescue Remedy (a calming mixture of flower essences) and Feliway (a natural calming pheromone) may also help soothe your stressed friend.
Clay litter is traditional, but some experts believe that it may clump and harden inside cats’ digestive tracts, causing painful and potentially fatal blockages. Never use it with kittens, especially, who are curious and like to explore their surroundings with their mouths. Also, avoid pine-based cleaners, which can be toxic to cats. “Are you sure this is safe?”
Cats suffering from cystitis or a urinary tract infection – both of which can be very painful and even life-threatening – may urinate in odd places, such as on ceramic or tile surfaces like a tub or sink. Has your cat found a way to

“This stinks.” Cats’ noses are very sensitive, and their waste can be pungent. Would you want to step barefoot into Kitty’s litterbox? Scoop solid waste at least twice daily. At least once a week, dump out the box completely, scrub it with vinegar, wash it with soap, and thoroughly rinse and dry it. Avoid self-cleaning boxes: Some cats

Scatter the chickpeas on top. Return to the oven and continue roasting until the vegetables are tender and nicely browned, 10 to 15 minutes longer. • To make the charmoula, combine the remaining ingredients in a food processor. Process until well blended. • Transfer the vegetables to a platter and spoon the charmoula over the top. Serve hot.

The Most Important Word in the English Language: Vegan Showing people that you’re vegan, and why, is a powerful and effective way to end speciesism. I make custom vegan hats, car magnets, stickers, pins – you name it – to try to break through people’s cognitive dissonance regarding “loving” animals yet continuing to eat and wear them. That’s why I also leave PETA’s vegan starter kits in shopping carts to plant the seed of compassion as people make life-or-death decisions in the aisles. The only way I know how to make sense of my life in this world full of cruelty is to do my best to stop as much of it as I possibly can. If I can help you do so, too, I’m here for you!

of Calvin Klein’s office in Manhattan. I played a “jail support” role for the staff who engaged in civil disobedience and got arrested to call attention to the plight of animals killed for fur. It worked: Calvin Klein ended fur sales, decades before many other holdouts. Another time, a friend and I were arrested in New York City for simply posting flyers for a vegan picnic! We spent an eye-opening night in jail. Working for EquALLity When I got a full-time job in PETA’s Literature Department, I made the best friends of my life. Now I’m a director, and I love my job. Schooled in Compassion Soon after the incident at KFC, I discovered the book Animal Liberation by Peter Singer. It logically articulated everything I’d begun thinking about human bigotry toward other species. In college, I started an animal rights group and distributed PETA literature, as well as using PETA props like a repurposed fur coat with “FUR IS DEAD” painted on the back. I made it my mission to be a walking billboard for animal liberation. For two years in a row, I kept a New Year’s resolution to wear a shirt with an animal rights message every time I was in public. Making Fashion History After graduation, I interned at PETA. The very first demonstration I attended was the now-iconic raid

W hen I was about 7 years old, I asked my mother why we ate animals, since making meat out of them killed them. She said that they just died when they got old. I pushed this information to the back of my mind, but it rushed to the front one day at age 16. I bit into a poor chicken’s wing at KFC, and a blood vessel burst! Her bright-red blood ran down her wing. That’s when it really hit home that meat came from an individual who’d had a heartbeat just like me. I didn’t know what a vegetarian was, but I instantly swore off eating flesh. Now that I’m a dad, I haven’t hidden the truth from my daughter, Marlowe. Not only is

Collins has known for a decade that experiments on animals do not lead to cures, yet he staunchly defended them, as his e-mails obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show. The RMD is already catching on: Members of the European Parliament who reviewed it enthusiastically voted in favor of developing an action plan to phase out animal experiments. In the US, Sens. Cory Booker and Rand Paul – along with Reps. Vern Buchanan, Brendan Boyle, and others – cosponsored the bipartisan FDA Modernization Act, which would end an antiquated rule from 1938 requiring that drugs be tested on animals before going to human trials.

W hat does nearly drowning terrified mice teach us about depression in humans? Nothing . What does pouring alcohol down newborn rats’ throats and shocking rats’ feet reveal about child abuse? Zilch . PETA is using cold, hard facts to dismantle the myth that torturing animals helps humans – because it doesn’t . Fighting for the Rights of Rats and Mice Take the widely debunked “forced swim test,” in which mice or other animals are usually dosed with a test drug, and made to frantically tread water to the point of exhaustion inside inescapable beakers:

Nearly 20 companies and universities worldwide have banned it, following outreach by PETA scientists as well as protests, PETA-proposed shareholder resolutions, and e-mails and calls from tens of thousands of supporters. Through his daily newspaper feature, Bizarro , Piraro challenges speciesism and illustrates just how bizarre it is to see our fellow Earthlings as toys, trophies, and lab tools.
“Keeping a bird in a cage is like keeping a cat in a straitjacket or a dog chained to a post: It’s cruel. Imagine yourself tied to a tree for the majority of your life just because the local birds and squirrels enjoyed the sound of your snoring.”
Award-winning, syndicated cartoonist Dan Piraro uses his artistic chops and wicked sense of humor to show things from another perspective – in other words, to empathize.
It’s a Bizarro World: Dan Piraro Illustrates the Comic Side of Animal Rights
“One of my pet peeves is how soulless developers will destroy habitat, then name the tasteless housing complex after it. If you see a gated community named ‘Eagle Bluff,’ you can bet there isn’t an eagle within 100 miles – but there probably used to be.”
“It’s anthropocentric to judge another species’ intelligence by how similar it is to humans’. Chickens can’t fix bicycles, but then they haven’t much need for a working bicycle, so why should they? I now try to appreciate other species’ intelligence for what it is instead of in comparison to mine.”

In 2002, Piraro created a cover for Animal Times magazine ( PETA Global ’s predecessor), and he’s provided many other thought-provoking cartoons since then.
“I’ve adopted many animals in my lifetime, and I don’t think someone with just-the-right-looking dog or cat could possibly be any happier than I’ve been with my mutts. It’s hard to believe humans breed animals like fashion accessories – at the expense of others in shelters who happen not to go as well with a designer sofa.”

A cow’s skin belongs to her, and she feels fear and pain in a slaughterhouse every bit as much as you or I would. That’s the message behind UrbanOutraged.com , PETA’s parody online “store” that pretends to sell jackets, boots, skirts, and bags made of the finest leather. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent that there are human faces on the jackets, human teeth on the shoes, and human blood oozing from the bags. This guerilla marketing campaign is aimed at persuading Urban Outfitters, Inc. – which owns Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Free People – to stop selling anyone's skin. Urban Outfitters brands already sell luxurious, animal-free textiles, so it should be easy for them to sell only those and remove all animal-derived products.
Wear Your Own Skin PETA's Avery Jacket is one-of-a-kind. Every cow killed for a leather jacket was also a unique individual whose skin rightly belonged to her, not to the fashion industry.

Model Liz Turner thinks wool belongs on sheep.
I stopped my car because something didn’t seem right. And it wasn’t. The ewe had given birth to twin lambs, and both had died beside her. I lifted her head gently. Her eyes were sealed shut with pus. One ear was full of maggots, as was one of her hind legs. Her life was hanging by a thread. There was a house close by. A woman there said she rented the house from the farmer. She had told him three days before a sheep was down. He had done nothing. I lifted the sheep into my car. She was skin and bones. Before driving away, I looked back over the paddock. It was dotted with the remains of more than a dozen dead ewes and lambs. Everything I needed for her treatment was at home, still a good hour’s drive away. “Please, hold on. We will help you, sweetheart. Please don’t give up.” When I arrived home, I placed the ewe on some blankets and gave her electrolyte solution. I cleaned out her ear with fly repellent and warm paraffin oil. Her eyes were bathed with boric acid and warm water. When she was comfortable, we went on a “medicine hunt,” returning with a bucketful of weeds. It must have seemed like a buffet to her, for suddenly she

She began to improve and was soon able to hold her head up. After 14 days, we were able to hold her in a standing position as she made feeble attempts to walk. It was almost three weeks before she could stand unaided. We were also bottle-feeding an orphaned lamb. Babby had lost her mum. Hannah had lost her
