A Donor’s Chain Reaction

A Novel Idea

Library Policing

Ugo Sap was so moved by the plight of donkeys forced to haul tourists in Petra, Jordan, that he purchased 500 cotton halters to replace the chains that owners used on their “amazing, kind animals.”

Simon & Schuster and other publishers donate animal-friendly children’s books to PETA’s Barks and Books program, which allows Mobile Clinic staffers and fieldworkers to distribute them to kids in places where books are in short supply.

At Little Free Libraries, Ivy Yoon replaces books and DVDs about hunting and other anti animal topics with vegan starter kits.

He’s now a patron of all PETA’s work for donkeys.

When Anna Kovach found out that QVC was selling a horrendous mousetrap that electrocutes animals, she gave the shopping channel a piece of her mind. A few phone calls later, QVC agreed to pull the plug on the cruel device.

When a kind person called PETA’s 24-hour emergency hotline seeking help for a dog abandoned at her apartment complex, a local PETA volunteer, Candice Tillman, rushed to the scene with a leash and treats. That dog, now named Daisy Mae, has become a permanent member of her family.

Providing Winter Jackets

PETA Business Friend and vegan outerwear maker NOIZE knew PETA’s Community Animal Project fieldworkers were outdoors all winter, so it donated down-free coats to keep them all warm while they delivered doghouses and straw bedding to neglected dogs in freezing weather. And the company didn’t stop there – it also underwrote the cost of all the straw bedding that PETA distributes over the winter.

One E-Mail Stopped an Atrocity

PETA Members Walk the Walk

After a whistleblower, who shall remain nameless, alerted PETA to the fact that Louisiana State University was surreptitiously buying dogs from a local shelter to kill and dissect, PETA was able to get appalled state lawmakers to pass a ban on the practice right away.

People who take action – by starting a conversation, making a remark, offering a suggestion, protesting, distributing leaflets, writing letters, signing petitions, blowing the whistle, or stepping in when they see animals being abused – are creating a climate in which PETA can accomplish Earth-shaking victories for animals.

When Sigrid Boehm approached local authorities about a domestic gander in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park who appeared to be in pain, she was told dismissively that his behavior was normal. But Sigrid persisted. Taking matters – and the bird – into her own hands, she rushed him to a wildlife rehabilitator and got him treated for a broken tailbone, a broken wing, and a deep, infected wound. No longer able to fly, he lived happily ever after with his kind rescuer.

I t was easy for Laura Shields to slap a PETA “End Speciesism” sticker on her car, but the stickerwas hard at work all day, every day, getting other drivers’ mental wheels turning each time she drove towork or dashed to the store. The impact of that one little action didn’t really hit home, though, until Laura stopped at a traffic light and another driver rolled down his windowand asked, “Hey, what does your bumper stickermean?” She replied, “All animals, regardless of species, deserve to be free and not exploited!” As he pulled away, the driver yelled, “I’mgoing to google it!”
