Klux Klan cheered on the shooters. That shoot is no more. Birds aren’t covered by the only US federal laws that offer scant protection to farmed animals and those used in experiments. However, that will change with PETA’s legal challengesW, exposés, and vigorous campaigns. PETA’s always been there for the birds, who have proved again and again that “bird brain” is a compliment. Their rights would be the same even if they were as dumb as a brick, but crows can actually count, make and use tools, and delay gratification by forgoing a treat in order to get a better one later. Pigeons – whose navigational abilities are legendary – can remember human faces, recognizing people who are nice to them and those who are mean; partner for life; and share all parenting duties, including making milk in their crops to feed their babies. Chickens, when not confined to factory farms, lovingly “talk” to their unhatched chicks, who chirp back to themwhile still inside the shell. And cockatoos in Australia make short work of “bird-proof” roofing strips and teach each other how to open trash bins. In the 1990s, PETA staff and supporters went to jail protesting the barbaric Hegins pigeon shoot, in which pigeons were blasted to bits while members of the Ku

reason, given what they had endured at human hands – they learned eight different laughs and greetings in their first afternoon in the office, simply by listening. Passing by their room, you could hear them practicing. At about 3:30 each afternoon, workers from the factory below our office walked up the hill to the bus stop. Every day at that time, the birds quietly moved to the window and waited. When they spotted someone ascending the hill, they would start their game. “Hello!” they would call out. The worker would glance around but see no one on the street. “Hello! Hello!” the birds would call out a little louder, using a different tone. The worker would look around, baffled. “Hello! Hello! Hello!” the birds would scream in unison. Finally, the person would look up, see the parrots, and, relieved to have solved the mystery, inevitably reply, “Oh, hello!” Then, the parrots would become as quiet as church mice. Whereas they had been completely intent on the game, now they were concentrating on grooming themselves or picking at a sunflower seed. “Hello, there! Hello!” people would call before finally giving up and moving on when the birds ignored them. Then the macaws would laugh one of the laughs they had adopted from PETA staff, drop the sham activity, and wait for their next victim.

Speciesist vivisectors who torture and kill animals in laboratories also conduct racist experiments like one at the University of Illinois– Chicago in which mice were forced to threaten or fight each other in an attempt to mimic socioeconomic struggles endured by “urban [African American] communities." After PETA and thousands of supporters objected to this outrage, the feds cut its funding. At the same time, PETA’s exhibit “Without Consent” launched on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It shows that vivisectors used vulnerable human subjects until they were forced to stop and that they now conduct cruel experiments on animals and will continue until kind people stop that, too. It also challenges US government institutions to switch to ethical, modern, non-animal research methods.

SHAME! Meet the 3 Animal Groups That Certify Cruelty
their face. In 2019, PETA Foundation attorneys filed a historic lawsuit on behalf of consumers who were misled into buying Nellie’s “free-range” eggs by pictures of hens enjoying lush, grassy fields. A PETA eyewitness observed a very different situation. At one Nellie’s egg supplier, nearly 20,000 hens were crammed into a crowded shed with just 1.2 square feet (0.1 square meters) of floor space each and a few tiny escape hatches that – even if the birds could reach them and they were open (which they often weren’t) – only offered hens access to a narrow strip of grass and dirt. The lawsuit opened the door for consumers to sue over similar advertising, but as of this writing, Nellie’s continues to make misleading claims. So, buyer beware! You may be paying for fake assurances and real suffering. Slightly Less Cruel Is Still Cruel There’s nothing the least bit kind about factory farming, transport, and slaughter. Making some marginal improvement in animals’ wretched lives does not absolve anyone of participating in a hideously cruel enterprise when they buy animals’ flesh or secretions. Perhaps animals are given a few
more inches of space. Perhaps they are kept in stalls with enough room to turn around. Maybe their beaks aren’t seared off with a hot wire. But the rest of their lot in life is still an abomination. Yes, kicking a dog six times a week instead of seven is an improvement, but wouldn’t it be better if people didn’t kick dogs at all? Endorsing grossly misnamed “humane meat” supports an industry that brings animals into the world solely for human purposes – causing them stress, trauma, and suffering, only to culminate in the fear and pain of the slaughterhouse. If that is so humane, why not take the kids to a factory farm and make a day of it? Because it isn’t humane – that’s why. PETA believes that animals are not ours to eat. They are just like us, with hearts, minds, emotions, and desires. The momentum for vegan living is here. Let’s actively reject the fallacy of humane meat. There is no such thing: The truth is that “humane meat” is a nightmare for animals, the Earth, human health, and every living being. It has to go!

Humane Society International, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), and Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) should hang their heads in shame or change their names to remove “humane,” “prevention,” and “compassion” from them. They are all major partners of the Global Animal Partnership (GAP), as are factory farmers – and together, they are certifying animal welfare “standards” that fail to prevent hideous treatment of animals. Consumers are being misled, and animals are suffering mightily. If a factory farm has a GAP certification – such as base, step 2, or step 3 – it receives announced audits only once every 15 months. And even if a farm is found in violation of these lax standards, it gets to keep its label while it is given time to make changes. GAP actually certified turkeys at Plainville Farms (see page 20) as being “handled in a way that does not cause injury” at the same time that PETA was documenting workers kicking, punching, and stomping on birds, as well as using them as living props in simulated sex acts. GAP’s certification program is meaningless and legitimizes the cruelty inherent in factory farming. PETA has written to all three animal welfare organizations and asked them to sever ties with the GAP organization, but they all stand fast!

turns out that “high” is a highly subjective word. A PETA undercover investigation into a Pennsylvania pig farm that suppliedWhole Foods revealed that such claims are unlikely to be worth the paper they’re printed on. The pigs PETA’s investigator filmed were never even given the opportunity to walk through the grass. They spent almost every minute of their bleak lives in crowded sheds with concrete floors. Each pig had roughly 5 square feet (less than 1/2 square meter) of space. Typically, the only time they ever went outside was when they were prodded from one shed to another or struck and goaded by workers onto a truck bound for slaughter. By Ingrid Newkirk

T hat’s me, hanging in a meat market in London one cold morning to make a point: that pigs aren’t that different from “us.” They’re flesh – the same color as me in fact – and they are full of feelings, as you and I are. And, like us, they don’t want to die. Thinking that they’re doing the right thing, well-meaning shoppers buy meat, milk, and eggs with positive-sounding labels like “free range,” “humane,” and “cage-free.” However, as PETA investigations have proved – and the pigs beside me found out – “humane” meat is a lie. Once again, PETA’s legal team found a way to protect birds when federal laws had failed them: Baton Rouge – where LSU is located – has a bird-protection ordinance, which states that it’s “unlawful to trap, hunt, shoot or molest” birds. So PETA called on the Office of the Parish Attorney to investigate Lattin’s capture of wild birds. The city’s animal control director met with Lattin and other LSU personnel to advise them that trapping birds in Baton Rouge was illegal. However, she quietly appealed to the city to change the ordinance. The city caved, and – without any public discussion – added a loophole exempting birds used in experiments. PETA’s Eagle Eye on LSU LSU seems to want to keep members of the public in the dark about the projects their taxes are funding: PETA submitted seven requests for public records to the university between May 30, 2019, and June 9, 2020 – including records

B irds are devoted mates and parents, experiments, and the only US law that offers any meaningful protection to animals in laboratories – the US Animal Welfare Act (AWA) – doesn’t even recognize birds bred for experimentation in its definition of animals . In the UK, the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act of 1986 includes limited protections for birds – but it also includes loopholes big enough to drive a truck through. The law has failed birds used in experiments, so helping them calls for creativity and determination. Luckily, those are PETA’s specialties. Jesse Helms’ Hideous Legacy That death sentence is a result of the 2002 Helms Amendment, a legal loophole drafted by the late Sen. Jesse Helms, a notorious opponent of civil and animal rights. It deprives millions of birds, mice, and rats of the AWA’s meager protections simply because of their species. Faith in Action Why I Defend ‘The Least of These’ By Dan Paden PETA Vice President of Evidence Analysis
T here’s a verse in the Bible that says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” During my nearly 20 years at PETA, I’ve seen some ugly things. Suffering can turn many people away from faith, and I get that. But it makes me even more committed – and more determined to stop cruelty. I’m Catholic, and my parents raised me to respect all living beings. My faith calls me to protect “the least of these,” which led me to the work I do now – poring over hours of undercover video that PETA’s investigators obtain inside places where God’s creatures are abused in hideous ways. Seeing so much cruelty can be soul-crushing, but I find the strength to keep going through prayer – and knowing that my work gets animals out of these hellholes.
Answering Animals’ Prayers I spend my vacations in silence at a Trappist monastery, where I pray with monks I’m blessed to have as friends. My desk (which is always well-stocked with toys and treats) is the unofficial clubhouse for the PETA “office cats,” who were rescued during the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in Louisiana 11 years ago. When I feel discouraged, I turn to the Psalms, which contain my favorite verse: “Let everything that lives and that breathes give praise to the Lord.” One day, all animals will be allowed to live as they were meant to and fulfill their own purposes, like my feline friends whose purring is a benediction to my days. That’s what I’m working toward, and I have complete faith that we will get there.

coordinating the animals’ placement and transport to sanctuaries and homes. The owners of Darlynn’s Darlins spent more than nine months in jail and were banned from owning animals ever again. Saving the Lambs of God Sheep are my favorite animals. They embody a peaceful, gentle, calm strength and remind me of the symbolism of “the Lamb of God.” Yet, like many people, I once wore their fleece and cherished the wool sweaters that my grandparents gave me. After I learned of the agony that goes into that yarn and the blood that’s washed out of it, though, I changed my view (and my clothes). On one undercover video, I watched a shearer twist a sheep’s neck until he broke it – then kick her headfirst down a chute, where she died. I’ve reviewed video footage from 14 of PETA’s exposés of the wool industry worldwide and found similar kinds of abuse in all of them. But thanks to the complaints we’ve submitted, PETA secured the world’s first cruelty convictions of shearers and Scotland’s first conviction of a farmer for abusing sheep.

Moving Mountains for Animals One of the “least of these” is a chinchilla named Chanel. When PETA’s investigator rescued her, she was in excruciating pain, with exposed bones in one of her legs. She was just one of nearly 1,000 chinchillas languishing in cages at Moulton Chinchilla Ranch, a squalid Minnesota breeding mill that sells chinchillas to pet stores and laboratories. Chanel’s wounds have healed, and she’s in a loving home, where she gets to run, jump, and explore, as chinchillas were created to do. Based on the evidence I submitted, state law enforcement executed a search warrant at the ranch and opened a criminal investigation. Federal authorities have also cited its owner with 42 violations of federal law. I also helped PETA shut down a sham sanctuary in Florida called Darlynn’s Darlins. The operators deprived animals of food for days, only occasionally tossing them rotten produce or moldy bread. I hopped a flight to Florida, thinking I’d stay for two days while I submitted PETA’s evidence to law enforcement. Officers seized nearly 200 animals, including an

a ban on hate speech based on race, ethnicity, or national origin, PETA took the flower by the thorns and asked the platform’s CEO to ban hate speech based on species as well. It’s no trivial matter, because words matter , PETA argued, writing, “As our recognition and understanding of social justice evolves, our language must evolve with it.” Common phrases from a long time ago reflect that animals are held in involuntary servitude, under the yoke, inside the steel lab cage, and even as “pets” who must behave themselves according to human whims and convenience. No wonder then that human language devalues and denigrates the independent worth and awe-inspiring qualities of other animals, labeling them inferior. Saying that a human attacker “acted like an animal” – even when dogs risk their very lives to send attackers packing! – furthers the idea that animals are lesser beings. In Psychology Today , Dr. Shareena Hamzah-Osbourne, a researcher at Swansea University in the UK, writes, “Often the language used in our everyday life leans towards the vilification of animals; for example, in the world of finance, Goldman Sachs was famously described as a ‘great vampire squid’ while other businesses with aggressive practices may be deemed ‘corporate sharks.’” In reality, vampire squid are gentle beings who put on bioluminescent lightshows to evade predators, and sharks socialize and form friendships – but you wouldn’t have an inkling of who these animals are based on the way we commonly talk about them. Other common usages trivialize animals’ suffering as well, such as when hunters call the animals they stalk and kill “game.” Casually using expressions like “crazy as a loon,” “cash cow,” “chicken out,” “catty,” “pick of the litter,” “wolf in sheep’s clothing,” and so on creates a false divide between humans and other animals that helps fuel speciesism, intentionally or not. So let’s keep the positive phrases, such as “strong as an ox” and “wise as an owl,” but dispense with the disparaging ones.

Two Cats Are Better Than One Some of my favorite life lessons came from a cat named Moomin. When I first took her in, she was a tiny, frail Siamese kitten with a respiratory virus that left her with a wheeze you could hear a mile away. There were other cats on the premises, but she was instantly drawn to the only other Siamese. Jarvis was handsome but reserved – to the point of snobbishness. I doubt Moomin realized that she, too, was Siamese. I think she was drawn to Jarvis because he looked just like Mom and Dad. This lonely little kitten pursued him relentlessly. Every time she pulled her tiny wheezing body up to his, he swatted her across the face, spat, and headed for higher ground. Yet no matter how often he moved, no sooner had he settled down again than along came Moomin, squashing herself right up against him, certain that, at any moment, Jarvis would recognize her as “family.” After about a week, Jarvis gave up. He began to let Moomin sit beside him while still ignoring her. After a few weeks, I caught him grooming her. From then on, they did everything together: ate, slept, and once, in a fabulous feat of coordination, simultaneously threw up on my shoe.
