T oday, Mingo is a social media “influencer” and the star of her own PETA video, but before that, the sweet golden retriever mix spent at least seven years confined to a 6-foot-by-10-foot pen. The few comforts she had during those long years were mostly supplied by PETA fieldworkers, who repeatedly pleaded with her owner to free her from her chain-link prison but to no avail. Over the years, PETA has delivered more than 7,600 sturdy, custom-made doghouses, spayed and neutered over 188,000 animals, and given emergency veterinary care to thousands more. A New Leash on Life It wasn’t until Mingo’s health began to decline precipitously that her owner finally gave PETA permission to find her a new home. Her freedom almost came too late: A veterinary exam revealed that she was suffering from heartworm disease and early-stage liver cancer. Mingo’s prognosis may be grim, but she has no idea that she’s living on borrowed time. She now lives with the PETA fieldworker who negotiated her release and is making friends, including fellow PETA-rescued dog Edith. She’s also chasing her new pal, Parker, around the yard as if she were 2 years old, not 10 – and she’s celebrating every day as if it were as precious as a peanut butter biscuit.
