A MESSAGE FROM Ingrid Newkirk PETA’s President S ix years ago, I got an urgent call from the wonderful Helga Tacreiter, who runs The Cow Sanctuary in New Jersey. A panicked veterinary student had contacted her: The sow he’d cared for and grown fond of was on a truck, bound for slaughter, despite his pleas to spare her. For two long years, that pig and seven others had endured metal “iron maidens” – pens only inches wider than their own bodies. They’d been artificially inseminated (i.e., raped) and all their piglets had been taken from them. Now, the veterinary course over, their “usefulness” was over, too. I said PETA would pay to save them if Helga could pull off a miracle, and she did. She somehowmanaged to reach the truck driver and persuade him to change course. All eight sows were taken to her sanctuary instead of the slaughterhouse! That night, they slept on grass, under the stars, smelling fresh spring air for the first time in their lives. Soon, they got to root in fields, swim in a pond, and eat strawberries, melons, and other treats. I still have the ugly plastic tags that Helga removed from their notched, infected ears. If PETA persuades enough people to go vegan, one day those implements of torture will be in an animal rights museum. Recently, one of the sows, Chummy, passed away. “She had a wonderful last six years that hopefully balanced out the horror of the first years of her life,” Helga wrote. “PETA stepping in made it possible.”
The world’s leading chocolatier, Barry Callebaut, listened to PETA and PETA Germany and stopped contributing to painful experiments not required by any law, sparing countless pigs, mice, rats, and other animals. And,
Dole executives had no idea that for years, through its nutrition chair at the Mayo Clinic, the company had unwittingly funded tests in which mice and rats were poisoned, starved, electrocuted, and forced to swim with a weight tied to their tails. Upon learning
all this from PETA, the world’s largest produce brand ordered that its funding go to superior, animal-free research and never toward harming animals again. Take Action Now Please visit PETA.org/Ajinomoto to end MSG maker Ajinomoto’s cruel tests on dogs and other animals.

Goodbye, meat. Hello, veggies. That was Sir Paul, Mary, and Stella McCartney’s message to British schools, urging them on PETA UK’s behalf to suspend mandatory servings of meat and dairy and replace them with more vegan choices. Kids agree: According to a poll, 70% of British children want more vegan options at school. “No one needs to eat meat,” Sir Paul said. “It’s time to revise the School Food Standards to help the planet, spare animals, and promote healthy eating.” Stay tuned!

P utting the pedal to the metal, PETA launched a campaign against ExxonMobil, which is the parent company of Esso and a top sponsor of the deadly Iditarod dog sled race in Alaska. PETA supporters armed with yellow caution tape and “blood”-filled gas cans “closed” ExxonMobil stations around the US. In 2020 alone, more than 220 dogs were pulled out of the 1,000-mile race because of exhaustion, illness, or injury. PETA has shown that when not racing, the dogs are frequently chained out on the ice for months,

PETA Prevails Throughout Pandemic
Victory! University Expels ‘Forced Swim Tests’
Stepping in and stepping up makes it possible not only for truck drivers to change course but for all humans to do so. Please, let’s constantly, loudly, and unflinchingly identify ourselves as what we are – animals – and challenge anyone who eats them. Introduce people to vegan ham and vegan bacon, and let them see how great life – not death – can be.
PETA and its international affiliates socially distanced and masked up (sometimes in animal costumes or hazmat suits), but the shutdowns and lockdowns didn’t slow them down. On the Las Vegas strip, PETA urged design houses to save everyone’s skin by ditching exotic skins. After Denmark killed millions of minks on fur factory farms because of a mutation of the coronavirus, protesters warned people fromMinneapolis and Brisbane to Dublin and London that capturing animals, eating them, experimenting on them, and wearing their skin is just asking for another pandemic. Take Action Now Spread the message about not spreading the virus with PETA’s popular “tofu pandemic” masks, modeled here by Big Bang Theory star Mayim Bialik. Get yours today at PETA.org/Store .
The recipe for unimaginable cruelty? Just add water: Forcing small animals to swim for their lives in glass beakers – for archaic “studies” of human depression – is all wet. After hearing from PETA Australia, the University of Adelaide banned the debunked “forced swim test,” joining King’s College London as well as Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, and other pharmaceutical giants.
